Hollywood actor Samuel L Jackson has compared Star Wars director GEORGE LUCAS to maverick filmmaker QUENTIN TARANTINO - because both men let him improvise on the set of their films.

Jackson starred in Tarantino's 1994 classic Pulp Fiction and has acted in all three of Lucas' STAR WARS prequels.

And despite Lucas' movies being for a family audience, while Tarantino's are renowned for their gratuitous bloodshed, Jackson was surprised at how similar the pair work.

Speaking before yesterday's (15MAY05) world premiere of the latest Star Wars film, EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH, at the Cannes Film Festival in France, Jackson said, "They both give me a lot of freedom to do what I want to do.

"They know I'm going to come with a lot of things to do the best job I can.

"They are both guys who know exactly what they want to do, and how they want it done, and explain that very clearly.

"They are almost the same guy, but one of them is loud and the other one is not."
