Country star Sammy Kershaw is to run as a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of his native Louisiana.
The singer announced his plans on Wednesday (13Jun07) after talking about his political ambitions for years.
In making the announcement, he said, "I am not afraid to make difficult decisions. I know that with leadership comes responsibility."
Kershaw, who is married to singer Lorrie Morgan, insisted that running a small empire throughout his career as a country star has prepared him for politics: "For the past 20 years, I have taken care of my employees and their families and have learned that leadership means personal sacrifice.
"It means putting the needs of others before your own."
Big questions about Kershaw's finances are sure to be asked - he filed for bankruptcy in federal court in Nashville, Tennessee in February (07).
Louisiana's elections will take place this autumn (07).
