Sweet Movie Review

Grim
In 1974, Dusan Makevejev apparently went insane.

The film he directed that year, Sweet Movie, stands as one of the most bizarre examples of what a moderately successful nut job can do with a camera and a budget -- a poorly received cautionary tale to filmmakers who get too full of themselves. (Indeed, Makevejev obviously got some flak for this one -- the film was banned in at least a few countries, and the man would not make another movie for seven years.)

Band Of Outsiders Review

OK
Jean-Luc Godard's Band of Outsiders isn't his best work, but it's full of interesting little touches and stolen moments that make it worthwhile. Most notable is the smashing Anna Karina's performance, which glues together a tepid, self-confessed dime-store novel-class story of Karina and two friends (Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur) who hatch a harebrained plan to rob Karina's aunt. A pair of set pieces -- the trio dancing in unison in a bar and their famous 9-minute, 43-second run through the Louvre -- make the movie worthwhile alone, but the disjointed, meandering, and somewhat random narrative isn't anything to write home about.

Black Widow Review

Weak
The grand dame of Lifetime-class "women's thrillers," Black Widow is both obvious (dig the title and try to figure out the plot -- Theresa Russell's the black widow; Debra Winger is the FBI agent hot on her tail!) and hopelessly dated (good lord, what's with Winger's hair?). Today, Widow is interesting as kitsch and camp and because poor Dennis Hopper is in it. Check it out next time it's on the WE network.

Mortelle randonnée Review

Weak
The 1999 Ewan McGregor/Ashley Judd flick Eye of the Beholder wasn't based on an original script, and it wasn't the first time Marc Behm's novel was turned into a film.

Mortelle randonnée (literally: Deadly Run) dates back 20 years, produced in France just three years after the book was published. By all accounts it's more faithful to the original story: Older private eye tracks black widow-style murderess, slowly becoming infatuated with her to the point where he becomes unable to do anything to apprehend her -- he's too busy watching.
