OSCAR hopeful Samantha Morton reportedly broke the nose of her closest friend - when she refused her lesbian advances.

The MINORITY REPORT star's unrequited passion for her best friend KELLY Snowden got the better of her when they were on holiday together in Greece during the mid-nineties.

Humiliated that Kelly had rejected her attempts to kiss her, the 26-year-old actress headbutted her friend in the face on the night they returned to Britain - leaving Kelly with a black eye, a split lip and a permanent lump on her nose.

Kelly tells British tabloid THE NEWS OF THE WORLD, "She just whacked me. I screamed. I had blood everywhere. I couldn't believe my best friend had done that. I just wanted to get out and I rang my mum in tears."

Snowden describes Samantha as being in a "trance-like state" with "glaring eyes" as she attacked, although she was certain the actress was completely sober.

A fortnight after the incident Morton - embarrassed about her aggressive behaviour - wrote to Kelly apologising for the attack.

She wrote, "I don't know what came over me but I think you always knew I loved you. I know you only see me as a friend and that's understandable, but sometimes I get this urge to kiss you."

Samantha begged Kelly for forgiveness in the letter - but her former best friend could not forget the bloody attack.

Kelly says, "I could forgive her. But every day when I look in the mirror I can see what she did to me starring back."
