Australian actor Sam Worthington will be absent from the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony as he has vowed to avoid the Hollywood prizegiving since his ill-fated 2010 appearance.
The Avatar star hit headlines for chewing gum while presenting a trophy at the Oscars in 2010, while he also attracted attention for shunning designer labels by wearing a pair of $20 (£12.50) shoes.
Worthington has now revealed he won't be hitting the red carpet for the 2013 show in Los Angeles on 24 February (13) because he no longer feels comfortable attending Hollywood's biggest night.
He says, "I don't like those things, I get nervous... It's ridiculous because I like the idea of it and for certain people that aspect of the film industry, they love that, and I don't. Hollywood is about doing the jobs for me. All the trappings are fine but look what happened the last time I went to the Oscars. I got told off about my Payless shoes, I got told off about this and told off about that.
"I could have been eating a ham sandwich (on stage) for all I care. It was a weird experience. There were all these people I had grown up admiring and, of course, it is very exciting being on top of the mountain but you have to be a certain type of person to get through it."
