White Lightnin' Review

Good
Loosely based on a real person, this unhinged drama gets increasingly lurid and grisly as it progresses. It's riveting, inventive filmmaking, but not remotely easy to watch.

In rural Appalachia, Jesco White (Campbell) is such a wild child that his daddy D-Ray (Watson) chains him to his bed so he won't sniff lighter fluid. Seeing his son as destined for a life in mental hospitals, D-Ray teaches him folk-dancing as an outlet. And after D-Ray is murdered, Jesco (now Hogg) uses makes a living as a dancer. Amid a life of drunken bar brawls, he falls for an older married woman (Fisher) who leaves her family for him. But Jesco is too obsessed with avenging D-Ray's death to have a normal life.

The Young Poisoner's Handbook Review

Excellent
Hugh O'Conor is outstanding as Graham Young, a British teen with absolutely no sense of morality. How so? When given a chemistry set, he promptly uses it to start poisoning his friends and family, not stopping until stepmom is dead. He's promptly caught, convicted, and sentenced to psychological rehabilitation... where he continues to manipulate the system to earn his release. Reportedly based on a true story, the black comedy is so thick here it will put some viewers off, but for fans of movies like A Clockwork Orange (of which this is a clear homage), it's the kind of nihilistic work that we rarely, rarely see these days.

Sweet Angel Mine Review

Very Good
Offbeat Canadian thriller (in the grand tradition of offbeat Canadian thrillers) is reminiscent of Psycho, Sleepwalkers, and Offbeat French thriller See the Sea. When a young man travels through Nova Scotia on motorcycle in search of his missing father, he stumbles upon a small farm run by a woman and her daughter. He signs on for a brief tour of duty and gets far more than he bargained for. (Isn't this always the case with these remote farms?) Taut and deeply disturbing, if not entirely believable. Recommended if you can find it on cable.
