Sucker Free City Review

Very Good
Even the most ardent Spike Lee fans may have missed Sucker Free City when it came and went on Showtime as a two-hour pilot for a series that never made it. Well, it's time to catch up and lament what might have been if Lee had been able to commit to directing more episodes. SFC is a tight, tense, multifaceted slice of San Francisco gang life that shows what happens when black, white, and Asian gangs stray from their traditional turf and start to bump up against each other.

Actually, the first to stray is the Wade family, when hippy dippy Mom (Kathy Baker) and Dad (John Savage) and their two teenage kids are forced out of their Mission rental due to rising real estate prices. They relocate to Hunter's Point, a tough gang-controlled black neighborhood where random gunfire is the norm. Mom and Dad are so full of liberal guilt that they express sympathy for the hoodlums who immediately ransack their house. Young Nick (Ben Crowley), who steals credit card numbers and deals coke at the finance office where he works, doesn't share his parents' views. Despite the fact that he likes to dress and act like a gangbanger, as so many white teens do, he considers the guys across the street to be animals.

Love And Basketball Review

Weak
Of all of the projects for Spike Lee to attach his name onto, Love and Basketball may go down as one of the most idiotic. Lee produced this Hoop Dreams meets Romeo and Juliet love story and his largest mistake by far was to hand the position of director over to Gina Prince-Bythewood. Prince may have made four films, but she still hasn't gotten it quite right. And, from the looks of it, she won't be getting it right anytime soon.

Love and Basketball concerns Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan), a basketball loving girl who wants nothing more than to be the first woman in the NBA. Her next door neighbor, Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) is the son of a NBA player and wants nothing more than to follow in his father's footsteps and get some booty along the way. When he realizes (at about age 18) that the booty he has been wanting all along has been living next door, he quickly hooks up with her. Both find themselves going to USC and both find themselves on the USC basketball teams.

The Best Man (1999) Review

Very Good
The best text for a film to toy with the "emotional heartstrings" of an audience is undoubtedly the romantic comedy. Broad in its appeal, the filmmaker doesn't have to worry about turning away certain audiences with horror, overblown special effects, or too much action. Romantic comedies are so successful because they parody our fascination with love and all its complexities. They are like rolling along a roller coaster of emotion, poking fun at our society's mores, twisting and turning towards a morally fulfilling conclusion. It's a Catch-22 -- despite the fact that we know what's going to happen in the end, we keep coming back for more, and are continuously intrigued time and again by the molding of a blissful resolution.

The Best Man, directed and written by Malcom Lee, is a prime example of an exhilarating love story that will certainly charm its audience. Well written and fabulously acted, this film hopefully will put some fresh new faces onto the Hollywood scene.
