Russian Doll Review

Very Good
See Matrix bad guy Hugo Weaving play a loveable schlub in Russian Doll, featuring Weaving as an Aussie P.I. who agrees to marry his best friend's Russian mistress so she can stay in the country indefinitely. Sound like a recipe for disaster? Surprisingly, Russian Doll is short on the hijinks you might expect from this genre, focusing more on the quaint romance that develops (of course) and the mild culture clash between the two conspirators. Generally amusing.

Soft Fruit Review

Weak
The epitome of what's wrong with Australian cinema today. Pity the poor mother who is not only dying of cancer, she has to contend with a dunderhead husband, three grating and obese daughters, and a visiting son, fresh out of prison. Obsessed with Jackie Kennedy, the whole story reeks of falsehood, yet another dysfunctional oddball family living down under, waiting for someone to die so the movie can end. Bizarre without any sense of subversion, despite a few moments that make you open your eyes more than halfway.

Praise Review

Good
Extremely bizarre and somewhat forced, this tale of sexual dysfunction between a pair of Australian wackos is moderately worthwhile for those with a strong stomach. Peter Fenton's mopey nobody is forgettable, but Sacha Horler's overweight, excema-riddled, genital wart-infested, neo-psychotic nymphomaniac defies description. Er, wait a second...
