Ryan Seacrest's plans for a romantic weekend in London with his girlfriend were ruined when their plane had to make an emergency landing.

The 'American Idol' host was taking 'Safe Haven' actress Julianne Hough to the British capital but their British Airways flight was forced to make an emergency ''heavy' landing'' - which occurs when the plane lands without having emptied the fuel tank - in Las Vegas.

A spokesperson for British Airways told MailOnline: ''Safety is always our top priority and as a precaution, the Captain decided to divert our Los Angeles to London service into Las Vegas, following a suspected technical problem.

''Our pilots used their training and experience throughout and the flight landed normally at Las Vegas.

''We provided hotels for the customers and we will be rebooking customers onto alternative flights out of Las Vegas as soon as possible.''

The couple are now staying at a hotel in the city and it is unclear when they will travel to London.

Julianne, 24, recently revealed she is smitten with the 38-year-old presenter and seeing him on TV at the recent Grammy Awards made her heart skip a beat.

She said: ''I flew in from Nashville - I was at my sister's baby shower - and I walked in right as he was on and he looked so hot. He looked so cute! I got all giddy because it was super exciting to see my man on TV. I was so proud of him.''
