Ryan Oneal cancelled his appearance on the Today show this morning (April 30, 2012), at the last minute. The 71 year-old actor has been suffering with prostate cancer, following a battle with leukaemia that began 14 years ago. Matt Lauer, the host of the Today show revealed that O'Neal had arrived to take part in the show but was forced to leave, as he was feeling unwell. "We are sad to say Mr. O'Neal showed up here this morning ... he was not feeling well," Lauer told the show's viewers. "He has since gone back to his hotel and we are told he is canceling all of his appearances for today."
The Love Story actor is understood to have re-scheduled his appearance on the show for tomorrow. Today's news comes shortly after the recent reports that two of his children have criticized his forthcoming book about his life with the actress Farrah Fawcett. Entitled 'Both of Us, My Life With Farrah,' the memoir is a chronicle of their life together. Both Tatum Oneal and Redmond O'Neal have reportedly criticized Ryan for his "self-serving narcissistic tendencies."
When he was diagnosed with cancer, O'Neal spoke to People magazine, urging others to make sure that they are screened for the disease. "I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time, and I urge everyone to get regular checkups, as early defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many," he said at the time.
