Ryan Gosling Explains Giggles At Oscars Best Film Mix-Up

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling’s reaction to the much-discussed and dissected ‘Wrong Best Film’-gate incident at last month’s Oscars won him a great deal of respect – but the star has now explained that he was stifling his giggles out of relief more than anything else.

Gosling was on stage with the rest of the La La Land cast and producers at February’s Academy Awards, when a few minutes in to their time proceedings were halted and confusion reigned for a few moments before it was announced that Moonlight had actually won the Best Picture gong.

But the 36 year old star was not just covering up his disappointment when he started giggling at the whole thing.

Ryan Gosling Embraced Terrence Malick's 'Different Way Of Working'

Ryan Gosling

The cast was in Austin, Texas, this month for the film's premiere at South by Southwest festival, where it was filmed. And Gosling was excited to finally see the finished film. "We made it maybe four years ago now or something," he says, "and so many things happened, it was such a unique process. But it's a Terrence Malick film!"

Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara in Song To Song

Malick is notorious for his filmmaking style, in which he shoots a wide range of scenes and then crafts the narrative in the editing room. "My character went through so many different incarnations," Gosling says. "And that's kind of the interesting thing about the way Terrence Malick works. He's sort of finding it as he goes along."

'Fake Ryan Gosling' Accepts German Film Award In Elaborate Prank

Ryan Gosling

An entirely unconvincing impersonator posed as Hollywood star Ryan Gosling in order to pick a German film award this week, as the result of complicated prank executed by comedians Joko and Klaas.

The actor himself, the recent star of La La Land and who has been cleaning up at awards ceremonies across the world, was expected to attend by the organisers of the Goldene Kamera awards. However, they had been pranked into believing this by prankster duo Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, who had set up a fake talent agency to fool them.

Ryan Gosling Signs Up For Neil Armstrong Biopic 'First Man'

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling is to reunite with his La La Land director Damien Chazelle in a biopic about astronaut Neil Armstrong, in which Gosling will play the first man on the moon.

The 36 year old actor is to play Armstrong in First Man, a project that will begin shooting in 2017. He’s apparently been attached to project for more than a whole year, with rumours beginning in December 2015, but he’s only recently penned a deal for the role.

Josh Singer, an Oscar winner for his script for Spotlight last year, wrote the movie based on James Hansen’s biography ‘First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong’. It is set to centre around Armstrong primarily, but will also tackle the lengthy endeavours that he, NASA and the country had to go through to put a man on the moon in the sixties.

The Nice Guys Review

Very Good

Writer-director Shane Black returns to the comedy-noir vibe of his 2005 hit Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with this riotously funny thriller set in late-1970s Los Angeles. It's an entertaining mix of hilarious action mayhem, slapstick and violence anchored by Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, who unexpectedly prove to be a superb comedy double-act.

It's 1977, and private detective Holland (Gosling) is searching for a porn star who was spotted alive after dying in a car crash. His investigation leads him to Amelia (Margaret Qualley), who has hired the thug Jackson (Crowe) to keep people off her tail. After beating up Holland, Jackson realises that maybe they should be working together, as other cases seem to be dovetailing around Amelia's politically powerful mother (Kim Basinger). But now Holland and Jackson are being chased by the legendary assassin John Boy (Matt Bomer). And Holland is having a terrible time keeping his bright 13-year-old daughter Holly (Angourie Rice) from getting involved in this dangerous case.

Gosling and Crowe play Holland and Jackson as a classic comedy duo along the lines of Abbott and Costello or Hope and Crosby: bumbling idiots who somehow manage to save the day due to dumb luck and someone smart looking out for them. In this case, their guardian angel is Holly, and young Aussie actress Rice more than holds her own against these A-list stars. Holly is the only person on-screen who has a clue what's actually going on, and Rice effortlessly walks off with the film, giving a knowing performance that's hugely engaging. The other scene-stealer is Bomer, whose slick, overconfident killer is simply screaming to be taken down a peg or two.

The Big Short Review

Excellent

Smart and snappy, this comedy is one of the scariest films of the year, using humour to outline the 2008 economic collapse from the inside. With characters who are based on real people, the film shows how economists made a fortune from the financial devastation inflicted on millions of families. And the movie cleverly points out that all of this happened (and people are still getting away with it) because the general public can't be bothered to pay attention.

Things were so booming in the first years of this century that it was easy for the media to divert the attention of Americans away from the dark underbelly of the financial world, creating big scandals out of nothing, spurring rampant buying sprees and making stars of non-entities like the Kardashians. Meanwhile in 2005, investment expert Michael Burry (Christian Bale) noticed that America's mortgage market was turning toxic. So he offered to "short" it, betting against this always-stable market by purchasing credit default swaps. The banks thought they would make a fortune from him, carrying on their dangerous practices. But other experts saw Burry's point, including the nerdy genius Mark Baum (Steve Carell), the shark-like Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling) and a pair of newbies (Finn Wittrock and John Magaro) who tip off their reclusive mentor Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt). When the economy imploded, these men became billionaires.

Director-cowriter Adam McKay is better known for silly movies like Anchorman, so he packs this film with raucous cutaways to pop culture references of the period, as well as hilariously absurd explanations of economic issues from, for example, Margot Robbie in a bubble bath or Selena Gomez playing blackjack. This approach actually heightens the horror of what's going on as fraudulent bankers and corrupt government officials conspire to undermine the foundations of the economy. Although the explanations still feel like gibberish to mere mortals, it's at least presented in a way that's entertaining.

Ryan Gosling On The 'Cautionary Tale' Of 'The Big Short'

Ryan Gosling Adam McKay Brad Pitt

In The Big Short Ryan Gosling plays a bank trader who along with a few like-minded individuals, helps predict the financial collapse and the housing market crisis by betting against the big banks. While the film blends both comedy and drama, the actor describes it as a ‘cautionary tale,’ that carries a moral message for all.

Ryan GoslingRyan Gosling stars in The Big Short.

“What makes the film special is that although its characters are walking a moral tightrope the film never really is, because the film never celebrates the score that the characters pull of in the end,” Gosling said. For the filmmakers the difficulty lay in finding the balance between telling the story in an entertaining way, but also being careful not to celebrate the end result.

The Nice Guys - Green and Red Band Trailer

If you're on the wrong side of the law and looking for someone to send a special kind of 'message', Jackson Healey might just be the man you call. One day his work takes him to the door of Holland March where he leaves his own particular type of message for Holland, a private detective who's currently a little down on his luck.

When an employee of the Department Of Justice finds that her daughter has gone missing, she employs Healey to find her by any means necessary. Out of his depth, Healey calls on the best private eye he knows. Initially very hesitant to work with the guy who only recently sucker punched him, Holland agrees to help find the girl.

As clues are revealed, it looks like Amelia (The missing girl) has somehow become intertwined with the mob who are trying to branch out in LA. As the amateurs hunt down Amelia, the case takes them down dangerous paths they never thought they'd venture down.

Rachel McAdams' 'The Notebook' Audition Tape Will Give You Shivers

Rachel McAdams Ryan Gosling Nick Cassavetes

Once of the world's best-loved romance movies, The Notebook, has just turned ten, marking a decade since the then little-known actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were catapulted into the spotlight with their breath-taking performance and onscreen chemistry.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, the story charts two lovers who fall in love during the early 1940s. Local country boy Noah Calhoun and heiress Allie Hamilton embark on a romance despite a myriad of issues, including the implications of their different classes and disapproval of Allie's parents.

Gosling's role as Noah was apparently secured fairly early on but director Nick Cassavetes had an extensive hunt for a leading lady to play Allie. In a newly-released audition tape, it's clear to see why Cassavetes and Gosling knew instantly that they wanted the Mean Girls actress for the movie.

Charlie Hunnam has been cast as Christian Grey.

Fans may have their own ideas about who should portray the characters of E.L. James' bestselling series. However, it seems unlikely anything will change despite the outcry. The film's producer, Dana Brunetti, has defended the casting; tweeting in mock surprise of the negative comments. He went so far as to accuse those attacking the casting decision of not being "true fans".

Benedict Cumberbatch Jj Abrams Star Wars Ryan Gosling Zac Efron Leonardo Dicaprio

Benedict Cumberbatch won lavish amounts of praise for his portrayal as (spoiler) main antagonist John Harrison/Khan Noonien Singh in Star Wars Into Darkness, and his first proper steps into big screen sci-fi may have earned him a call up to one of the biggest sci-fi jobs in Hollywood. This Brit actor is reportedly in discussions to star in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode Seven, working alongside his Star Trek director JJ Abbrams again, various reports suggest (Film Chronicles were first to reports).

Cumberbatch could be returning to a villainous role in the Star Wars reboot

The star of BBC series Sherlock, which returns to our screens soon, is rumoured to be in advanced talks with Disney and those working closely with the Star Wars project to feature in an unspecified role in the upcoming picture. It is unknown what role Cumberbatch might be playing as the storyline is being heavily guarded by the select few that have been given any insight into the project. Chances are, we won't find out whether Cumberbatch, or anyone else for that matter, have even been approached to star in the film for a good few months, as Disney continue to keeps their clandestine operation running in the upmost secrecy.

Marky Mark Wahlberg has been a tough guy in approximately nine billion films, but he’s never been a comic book superhero like Christian Bale and Robert Downey Jr have. And it’s the latter he wants to replace as Iron Man, should he be given the chance.

"I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey, [but] it's one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I've never been asked,” he explained to Yahoo! Early Predictions Peg Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin As Possible Options Warner Bros.' Next Batman

Ryan Gosling Josh Brolin Zack Snyder Jensen Ackles Andrew Lincoln Joseph Gordon-Levitt Simon Pegg

Advance planning for “Man of Steel 2” is well underway and that can only mean one thing – Warner Bross and DC are looking for their next Batman. Sure, they could have teamed up Kale-El with, say, Wonder Woman for their next step towards the franchise to end all franchises – Justice League. As it stands, though, the list of contenders is largely male, white and around the age of 40.

Henry Cavill, Man of Steel Australian Premiere
Predictions abound as to Henry Cavill's co-star in Man of Steel 2.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, quite a few actors have been considered for the part – from Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles and The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln (could you imagine Rick Grimes as Superman?) to trending names such as Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. More outlandish rumors have even pegged Simon Pegg (ha!) and Daniel Dae Kim as being in the running. As of yet, however, no one is actually in the running.

There's A Lot To Love (And Hate) In "Only God Forgives"

Ryan Gosling Kristin Scott Thomas

There’s a lot to love in Only God Forgives – or hate, depending on where exactly on the love/hate Nicholas Winding Refn spectrum your sympathies lie. This film is no Drive, by any stretch of the imagination and will not endear the Gosling/Winding Refn duo to any fans of that film. Still, the things that get some moviegoers to demand their money back are the exact same things that make others love this movie.

Tyler Hoechlin More Likely To Be Batman Than Ryan Gosling: Here's Why

Ryan Gosling Tyler Hoechlin Michael Fassbender Jon Hamm Jake Gyllenhaal Zack Snyder Joseph Gordon-Levitt David S. Goyer Christian Bale

Ever since Zack Snyder announced a Superman/Batman film in the works at last weekend's Comic-Con, the internet has exploded with rumors; few of which have been about the movie and more about who should replace Christian Bale as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel.

Ryan Gosling's was a name that surfaced quickly and it's easy to see why: Gosling has great stage presence and, as we saw in Drive, the ability to flip from calm to guns blazing in mere seconds. What Culture say that the 32 year-old "perfectly fits this more brutal and tortured Batman, not to mention that he possesses the suave playboy looks to serve as the cover story." So it's a shame really that it's not going to be Ryan.

Apparently, he and Zach Efron went in for meetings at Lucasfilms last week, and while no role has been confirmed for the former Disney star, Gosling is in line for a major role. This is all down to Latino Review, who have a solid history for breaking this kind of news.

Step Aside Ryan Gosling! Tyler Hoechlin Could Be In Line For Batman Role

Tyler Hoechlin Ryan Gosling Henry Cavill Zack Snyder David S. Goyer

Zack Snyder announced at last weekend's Comic-Con that the Man of Steel sequel would also include Batman as DC Comics edged closer to its Avengers equivalent: the Justice League of America. Stunned fans were treated to a reading from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns comic book - in which Batman and Superman clash - followed by a projected teaser image that combined the superheroes' logos. Shortly afterwards, writer David S. Goyer revealed that the production team were mulling over names such as Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman after a similarly titled project failed to get the green light back in 2002, Yahoo! News reports. However, the focus has shifted to who would replace the gravel-voiced Christian Bale as Batman.

Could Teen Wolf Tyler Hoechlin Evolve Into Batman?

Cosmic Book News claims to have been told that "Regarding the new Batman, Tyler Hoechlin is being heavily considered for the part and will be getting a screen test alongside Henry Cavill. Warner Bros. and Snyder are looking at somebody to play the new Batman with a reputation similar to Cavill's, when Cavill was testing for Superman. It's also said that better known actors could also be testing for the role. As filming is expected to begin in early 2014, screen tests should be happening soon."

The Final Word On 'Only God Forgives? Refn's Worst. Probably Gosling's.

Ryan Gosling Nicolas Winding Refn Kristin Scott Thomas

Nicolas Winding Refn appears to have hit a bum-note with his latest movie, the violent drama Only God Forgives, starring Hollywood pin-up Ryan Gosling.

Refn had hinted at some degree of skill and precision with Bronson and to a lesser extent Drive, though Only God Forgives appears to be a backwards step for the enigmatic filmmaker and certainly a career blot for Gosling.

On the face of it, the narrative looks solid. Gosling plays Julian, a drug-king pin of the Bangkok underworld who doubles as the owner of a Thai boxing club. When his brother Billy is suddenly murdered, his unstable mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives from London to bring back the body, however, she also wants Julian to settle scores and avenge the killing of his brother.

Is Ryan Gosling's 'Only God Forgives' Too Violent For His Fanbase?

Ryan Gosling Nicolas Winding Refn Kristin Scott Thomas

There were audible boos in the auditorium when Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn's latest effort Only God Forgives premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. Several of the theatregoers walked out, owing to the explicit violence in the film that tells the story of a Thai boxing club owner who goes on the hunt for his brother's killers.

The ever-capable Gosling - who showed flashes of sheer brilliance in 'Place Beyond the Pines - and Kristin Scott Thomas, one of the world's greatest actresses, appears to be a match made in heaven, though critics are not enamoured by the movie. The problem may lie with Refn's writing.

Peter Debruge of Variety said: "The wallpaper emotes more than Ryan Gosling does in Only God Forgives, an exercise in supreme style and minimal substance from Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn."

Gosling Film Booed At Cannes, But Is 'Only God Forgives' That Bad?

Ryan Gosling Nicolas Winding Refn

A Gosling film booed at Cannes? Surely not! Well, it looks as though Nicolas Winding Refn's new movie Only God Forgives - about a boxing club owner who is pressured by his mother to avenge the death of his brother's murder - wasn't exactly the audience pleaser that several critics made it out to be. According to AFP, "Boos rang out at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday," with many in the auditorium wincing or unable to watch.

Fortunately for Gosling, he was nowhere near the screening after sending his apologizes for giving Cannes a miss this year. He is currently in Detroit shooting his directorial debut How To Catch A Monster, "Can't believe I'm not In Cannes," Gosling said in a letter read out by Cannes director Thierry Femaux, "I was hoping to come but I'm on week three shooting my film in Detroit. Miss you all. Nicolas, my friend, we really are the same persons in different dimensions. I'm sending you good vibrations."

His absence is a clear blow to the festival, though Gosling wouldn't have enjoyed the reaction that Only God Forgives incited inside the auditorium in France. The violence is said to reach bizarre extremes and although several critics gave it five-star reviews, most conceded that cinema walkouts are inevitable when the film gets a full release. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw wrote, "It may not win the Palme D'Or, but it could win the Walkout D'Or, a gold trophy of a cinema-seat banged up into the upright position. Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives is a glitteringly strange, mesmeric and mad film set among American criminal expatriates in Bangkok." Jordan Hoffman at Film.com quipped, "There's an old expression in musical theater - you don't leave humming the lights."

Cannes Wasn't Forgiving To "Only God Forgives"

Ryan Gosling Nicolas Winding Refn Kristin Scott Thomas

There is an understanding in Hollywood that if they don’t like your film at Cannes, you’ll know, which is exactly what happened yesterday with Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest flick Only God Forgives. The film stars Ryan Gosling with Refn in the director’s seat – a promising combination, considering that their last team project (Drive) nabbed the Best Director award at the festival. Only God Forgives, however, probably isn’t going to reach the same acclaim, at least not if the audience of journalists, movie critics and assorted insiders is any indication.

Ryan Gosling, Place Beyond the Pines Premiere
Once again, Gosling has been type-cast as the strong, silent character.

According to Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan, the movie has ample amounts of blood and guts, properly amplified by the eye-popping red lighting that’s meant to signify Bangkok’s seediest neighbourhoods. What it doesn’t have though is the subtlety and tender moments, necessary to balance out the gore. Gosling’s performance is once ago according to type – the strong silent type, who is bullied by his terrible mother into avenging the death of his even more terrible brother.

Anna Kendrick's Inappropriate Ryan Gosling Tweet Goes Viral!

Anna Kendrick Ryan Gosling Eva Mendes Edgar Wright

Anna Kendrick lit up the internet on Monday (January 12, 2013), tweeting a deadpan and frankly hilarious message about her love for Hollywood hunk Ryan Gosling. The 27-year-old has starred alongside the likes of George Clooney, Joseph-Gordon Levitt and Robert Pattinson, though it appears Kendrick is longing for a starring role alongside everyone's favourite leading man, Gosling.

Kendrick tweeted, "Ugh-NEVER going to a Ryan Gosling movie in the theatre again. Apparently sitting in the back row and masturbating is still considered 'inappropriate'". Posted at 10.45am on Monday, the message has been re-tweeted 20,713 times and favourited over 17,000 times. Replies to the surprising tweet began flooding in almost immediately, with one user saying, "HAHAHAHA you're actually amazing omg. I wish you followed your fans cause I would DIE to be followed by you!" Another user - Emily Higgins - had an ingenious idea, saying, "They should put this in the trailers for Gangster Squad to get people to watch. Best testimonial yet." Not a bad idea, considering Gosling's new movie is garnering less than impressive reviews. Finally, Scuba Cat offered the less helpful, "Wow I love you."

Despite the tweeting, a date probably isn't on the cards, given Kendrick has been linked to the Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright since 2009. Gosling also seems pretty infatuated with actress Eva Mendes too. Oh well.

Gangster Squad Review

Very Good

This may be based on a true story, but the filmmakers never bother exploring the complexities of historical events, instead opting for a comic book-style approach that's entertaining but somewhat unsatisfying. Still, this style-over-substance approach at least produces a rollicking police thriller that's often a lot of fun to watch, packed with gifted actors who gleefully chomp through the scenery.

The setting is 1949 Los Angeles, where the notorious gangster Mickey Cohen (Penn) is launching a Chicago-style mob takeover of the city. The police chief (Nolte) is determined to stop him, but feels surrounded by corruption, so he hires straight-arrow detective John (Brolin) to head up a secret squad that will operate off the books to stop Cohen, whatever it takes. John's pregnant wife (Enos) isn't thrilled by this, but she helps him select his team: techie Conway (Ribisi), gunslinger Max (Patrick), hot-shot Coleman (Mackie) and quick-learning rookie Navidad (Pena). And then there's pretty-boy detective Jerry (Gosling), who courts danger by launching a fling with Mickey's moll Grace (Stone). Understandably, their task doesn't go smoothly.

Billed as the untold story of what really happened, the film ignores quite a few key facts while indulging in implausible plotting and overly colourful characterisations. In other words, it's impossible to believe anything we're watching, which eliminates all of the relevance and resonance that could have filled this story of police corruption, out-of-control capitalism and especially the use of illegal methods to do the right thing. Instead, the film is all shiny surfaces, with flashy production design, too-immaculate costumes and haircuts, and a plot that reduces a complex situation into a simplistic action movie narrative.

Wait, Has Henry Cavill Signed On For Fifty Shades Of Grey?

Henry Cavill Ryan Gosling Mark Wahlberg Michael De Luca Daniel Craig Ian Somerhalder Michael Fassbender

As Hollywood rolls into awards' season, the head honchos at Universal Pictures and Focus Features are probably busy plotting for 2013 having landed the rights to the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, Paramount and Mark Wahlberg's company all placed bids for the rights in one of fiercest movie bidding wars of recent times. Despite the general critical mauling of E.L. James book (though massive sales figures), the movie boasts a pretty impressive team. The Social Network producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti have signed on while Terra Nova's Kelly Marcel will pen the script.

But that's all the boring stuff. We want to know who's playing Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele right? Murmurings around Hollywood suggest Ryan Gosling is pretty much everyone's first choice to play the wealthy protagonist. Universal want Gosling, the producers want Gosling, the fans want Gosling, hell, Gosling probably wants the role himself. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power have the Drive actor as 2/1 favourite, though one man threw a pretty giant spanner into the works this week. He's the third favourite with the bookmaker, he plays Superman in the forthcoming movie Man of Steel. He is Henry Cavill

The 29-year-old British actor - who screen-tested for the role of James Bond before Daniel Craig got the part - discussed Fifty Shades of Grey during a recent interview with Details magazine. When quizzed as to whether he would take the role, Cavill gave a curious answer. Whereas Gosling, Ian Somerhalder and Michael Fassbender have coyly laughed off suggestions of becoming Mr Grey, Cavill said, "Whether that happens, that decision will be made at the time it has to be made. It would be a very different kind of thing than Man of Steel." The interviewer observed that Cavill spoke in "the measured tones of someone who knows his way around a Hollywood gag order."

Why ‘Skyfall’ Could Land James Bond An Oscar Nomination

Daniel Craig Sam Mendes Javier Bardem Judi Dench Coen Brothers Forest Whitaker Leonardo Dicaprio Ryan Gosling Steven Spielberg Ben Affleck

'Skyfall', the new James Bond movie directed by Sam Mendes, hits cinemas on November 9 and already attention is turning to whether or not the picture could snag a surprise Oscar nomination.

'Oscar bait' is a term often used to describe a movie awash with all the key themes that the Academy so readily rewards. For example, they're suckers for epic dramas (Titanic, Gladiator), romance (Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient) and movies packed full of previous Oscar winners (Traffic, The Kings Speech). Oscar bait movies usually hit cinemas at the same time each year- in November or December, wafting themselves under the noses of the Academy just weeks before nominations are announced.

This year, Sony seems to have thrown 'Skyfall' into the fray as Oscar bait, so does the film have a realistic chance of a nomination? Well, as HitFix.com rightly points out, the movie has attached an Oscar winning director in Mendes, an Oscar winning and three time nominated actor in Javier Bardem and an Oscar winning actress and six-time nominee in Judi Dench. Its screenwriter is a three-time nominee while cinematographer Roger Deakins is a nine-time nominee who is almost certain to scoop the prize come February if industry insiders are to be believed. Deakins - best known for his work on just about every Coen Brothers movie - is revered in the movie business and often considered the finest cinematographer of all time. On top of all this, Skyfall's production designer, art director and second unit director have all been handed nominations in the past: i.e - the movie has all the bases covered.

Video - Ryan Gosling Breaks Up Fight

The videographer who captured actor Ryan Gosling break up a New York street brawl earlier this summer (24Jun11) has revealed the savvy star offered cash to end the squabble. The Notebook star was strolling through the streets of the East Village when he came across two men fighting in the middle of the road. Passersby had begun to gather nearby to watch the commotion, and Gosling stepped in to break up the spat over the ownership of a painting. Photographer Valeria Alvea, who captured the footage on camera recalls "Ryan Gosling took the two men to the corner of the street, like a chaperone and he had them explain the story, but things began to escalate again quickly. Ryan put a stop to it, then he asked, 'How much is the painting?' "The painter told him it was $10. Ryan gave him $20 and said, 'Does this cover what the man owes you?' The painter thanked him and Ryan continued on his way."

Fracture Review

Weak
It is hardly a reassuring sign when one of the more interesting things in a film is not even sentient. Over the title sequence of Fracture, and in the midst of some of the duller stretches (of these there are many) we see a glittering sort of Rube Goldberg contraption, all shiny metallic tracks and carved wooden wheels, where small glass balls skitter and roll in an elaborately choreographed dance. It's a beautiful piece of elegant machinery and, one hopes, symbolic of the many complex and artfully managed plot twists to come. Instead, what we're given is Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling sleepwalking around each other as they navigate through one of the year's laziest films.

Fracture has no excuse to be so lazy, given the actors at its disposal and a setup that should have made this an easy slam-dunk. Hopkins plays Ted Crawford, an aeronautics engineer who's found out that his wife Jennifer (Embeth Davidtz) is having an affair with police detective Rob Nunally (Billy Burke). Confronting her at home, Crawford shoots her in the head and calmly waits for the cops to arrive. When they do, it's with none other than Nunally at the lead, who's shocked and enraged at finding Jennifer in a pool of blood and Crawford standing there as though nothing had happened. After a quickly-interrupted beating from Nunally, Crawford later confesses and even waives his right to a lawyer. When it's all dropped in the lap of assistant district attorney Willy Beachum (Gosling), the case couldn't seem more airtight, which is good since Beachum can't wait to slip the bonds of lowly civil employment for a well-paying private sector job.

The United States Of Leland Review

OK
In The United States of Leland, vaunted young actor Ryan Gosling ostensibly plays the mysterious title character, Leland P. Fitzgerald, a teenager facing a prison sentence for the murder of the mentally challenged younger brother of his ex-girlfriend Becky, but for the most part he's doing a passable Jake Gyllenhaal impression.

Maybe I've seen too many Gyllenhaal movies, but Leland's slightly hunched posture and quizzical facial expression, indicative of a familiar detached dreaminess, recalls indie prince Jake constantly, right down to the casting of go-to indie girlfriend Jena Malone as Becky (who acted alongside Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko). To be fair, I wasn't thinking of Gyllenhaal for every second Gosling was on screen. Sometimes I was musing over his unfortunate resemblance to Screech from TV's Saved by the Bell.

The Believer Review

Good

Controversy has engulfed "The Believer" since its premiere at last year's Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize but still couldn't find a distributor because it's a frank and frightful portrayal of an angry young Jew who hates his own heritage so much he becomes a neo-Nazi.

An intense examination of faith and a challenge to the notion of blind faith, it has been misunderstood by filmgoers who can't stomach being inside the head of Danny Balint (played by "Murder by Numbers" killer Ryan Gosling). That is certainly understandable -- it's an ugly place full of intolerance and self-loathing.

The film has also been criticized over the possibility that it might find an audience among hate groups who may hear Danny's articulate, even well-argued malevolence and not see that in his obsession he's discovered a new, more profound (if twisted) devotion to his congenital creed.
