Pio Leyva, a singer with the Buena Vista Social Club, has died at the age of 88. The Cuban performer suffered a heart attack on Wednesday (22MAR06), his family confirmed. Leyva performed on more than 25 albums and was most famous for his work with late guitarist Compay Segundo, which spanned five decades. He is the fourth member of the Buena Vista Social Club to die in three years, after Segundo and Ruben Gonzalez died in 2003 and Ibrahim Ferrer passed away in 2005. The club found international fame after being promoted by guitarist Ry Cooder and appearing in a film by Wim Wenders film.
Legendary African musician Ali Farka Toure has died following a long illness. He was 66. Toure, who last month (FEB06) won his second Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album alongside TOUMANI DIABATE for IN THE HEART OF THE MOON, passed away in Mali capital Bamako. He will be buried in his hometown of Niafunke tomorrow (08MAR06). Radio stations in Bamako have been playing Toure's music non-stop in tribute to the late musician. Toure, who was born in Timbuktu in 1939, once served as mayor of Bamako. He first won a Grammy for his 1994 album with American guitarist Ry Cooder, TALKING TIMBUKTU.
The 78-year-old Cuban singer died on Saturday (06AUG05) just days after ending a tour in Europe and checking into hospital with gastroenteritis symptoms.
Recordings of Ferrer's hits were played at his funeral at the Colon cemetery, which was attended by more than 200 friends, family, Cuban officials and fellow musicians.

Acclaimed Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer died in a Havana hospital yesterday (06AUG05) after suffering multiple organ failure. He was 78.
Ferrer achieved international fame following the release of the 1997 album Buena Vista Social Club, which he recorded alongside leftfield American musician Ry Cooder and a host of other Cuban musical legends.
The record was such a success, film-maker Wim Wenders directed a 1999 documentary feature of the same name, featuring the various artists at work.
