Mommie Dearest Review

Very Good
Horror's got nothing on Faye Dunaway's harrowing portrayal of Joan Crawford -- a woman who will not be remembered as the Oscar-winning star of Mildred Pierce and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, but more likely as the subject of Mommie Dearest, a scathing biography based on a tell-all "novel" penned by Crawford's adopted daughter Christina.

While it's justly criticized for trivializing child abuse, Mommie Dearest paints a unique picture of the kind of criminal behavior movie stars and other celebrities are allowed to get away with. (O.J. anyone?) The horrific picture of consistant, repeated abuse and down-right craziness is enough to make you think your family is downright normal. Of course, my mother always alluded to "wire hangers" when I was growing up... wonder what that means.

Amityville II: The Possession Review

Bad
At least Amityville II: The Possession has some basis in fact. This is -- on the surface -- the story of how the DeFeo family (here the Montellis) got murdered one night at 112 Ocean Avenue on Long Island, New York. (The subsequent events are the subject of the original Amityville Horror.)

In real life, the eldest son of the DeFeo family murdered six of his family members in their sleep while they slumbered in their beds. In Amityville II, the family structure is about the same -- and they all get the business -- but little else remains intact. Here we have a tale about a rough and tumble kid named Sonny (Jack Magner), who hates his father, romances his sister (Diane Franklin, best known as Better Off Dead's Monique), and gets possessed by demons who live in a secret room in the basement.

The Dark Half Review

Good
Genuinely scary though unmemorable Stephen King thriller features a pedantic writer tormented by his "dark half," who enjoys writing twisted horror stories. Recently out on DVD, and worth a look for Timothy Hutton's freaky portrayal of the two halves.

Racing With The Moon Review

Very Good
Coming of age, WWII style, with Sean Penn and Nicolas Cage eager to head off to war, getting into trouble along the way, and ending up not entirely sure about the whole thing. Much like any number of films in this vein, Richard Benjamin's movie flirts with disillusionment while simultaneously romanticizing a bygone era. Both come across moderately well in this endeavor, thanks to the dual talents of Penn and Cage raking the muck extensively.
