Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons has cancelled his anti-US President GEORGE W Bush protest in New York next week (30AUG04) after the costs of the march spiraled out of control.

The Def Jam RECORDS founder, who has been encouraging the youth vote at his HIP-HOP SUMMITS across America, was planning to march down Manhattan's Eighth Avenue on the opening day of the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION (RNC) on Monday (30AUG04).

Simmons is against the President's stance on a host of issues, including immigration and welfare reform, and is so incensed by Bush's policies, he's promised to pay $100,000 (GBP55,500) of his HIP-HOP SUMMIT ACTION NETWORK and STILL WE RISE group expenses. He has also enlisted celebrity pals SEAN 'P DIDDY' COMBS, Jay-Z, the Beastie Boys and Mariah Carey to join the protest.

Sources claim Simmons decided to cancel the protest after his wife KIMORA LEE SIMMONS was arrested for marijuana possession and driving charges last month (JUL04).
