Singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright has credited his baby daughter with helping him overcome his grief following his mother's death.
The gay star was left devastated in 2010 when his mum Kate MCGarrigle lost her battle with cancer.
However, just a year later, Wainwright and his partner, Jorn Weisbrodt, became parents to a little girl called Viva, whose mother is Leonard Cohen's daughter Lorca, and the singer is convinced the baby's arrival saved him from losing his sanity.
He tells Britain's The Sun, "Seriously, it's a lovely turn of events. It all coincided with my mother's death and I can't totally vouch for my sanity at that time but I did wake up and I have this beautiful daughter to help me through. And I thank her mother very much for giving me that.
"She's adorable. She's beautiful. She walked at nine months. I know touring will be difficult being away from her as this kid is really going be the captain of my ship for a long time. She spends most of her time in L.A. or Paris and I miss her when we are apart."
Wainwright also reveals Viva is already being introduced to music.
He adds, "Whether she will follow both her families into music, I don't know but she already has a very high-pitched scream... maybe she'll become an opera singer. But it's really about what she chooses to do and I'll be happy."
