A Week In Movies: World War Z arrives, Britain braces for Liberace, Superman speaks

World War Z

This week's big world premiere was in London for the zombie apocalypse thriller where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie made their first public appearance since news of Jolie's pre-cancer surgery. They were joined on the red carpet by director Marc Forster and other cast members. The film opens in two weeks.

This weekend British moviegoers get a chance to see Michael Douglas and Matt Damon on the big screen in the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra. The film was broadcast last week on HBO in America, which means it isn't eligible for Oscars, but look for it to mop up Emmys and Golden Globes. And with glowing reviews from UK critics, Bafta nominations are also expected.

Next week's big premiere is for Man of Steel, the anxiously awaited new Superman movie. The film's British star Henry Cavill spoke to the press this week, talking about the pressure of playing such an iconic character and how it felt to wear that suit. Russell Crowe also spoke about playing Superman's father, a role previously incarnated by Marlon Brando.

Monsters University

Another film coming soon is Monsters University, a prequel to the animated 2001 classic Monsters Inc. John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprise their characters Sulley and Mike, this time as students involved in frat-house pranks as well as another big adventure. They spoke to the press about getting back into their furry alter egos after all these years.

There was a new trailer this week for the all-star kidnapping thriller Prisoners, led by Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Melissa Leo and Viola Davis. Directed by ace Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Incendies), it looks like a complex, harrowing story about a man who takes justice into his own hands. It opens in September.

Opening in October, Joseph Gordon-Levitt writes, directs and stars in the offbeat romantic-comedy Don Jon, about an arrogant womaniser whose life takes a surprising turn. The trailer shows a hilariously over-pumped Gordon-Levitt looking like a character from Jersey Shore chasing a gorgeous bimbo (Scarlett Johansson). Julianne Moore and Tony Danza costar.

Machete Kills

And finally, we also had the first trailer for  sequel to the B-movie spoof. It stars Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson and Lady Gaga. Plus Charlie Sheen as the US President, acting under his birth name Carlos Estevez. The trailer is hysterical, so lets hope the movie lives up to it.
