A Week In News: Ian Watkins Trial, AMAs Triumph And A Beloved Pet Dies

Ian Watkins will be charged

Ian Watkins Trial: It's a shame we have to start with this one but little else has seen the headlines all week. The disgraced former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins, 36, describing himself as a "determined and committed paedophile" in the ongoing court case, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted rape and 12 other offences including sexual assault and taking, making and distributing indecent images of children.

What's more, innocent parties including Alexa Chung, Fearne Cotton and Ian "H" Watkins from Steps have been dragged into the reporting. Peaches Geldof has received stern criticism after she shared the names of the women who let Watkins abuse their children.

One Direction To Success: It's been a great week for popband One Direction who picked up the Favourite Pop/Rock Album and Favourite Pop/Rock Group awards at last weekend's American Music Awards and have gone on to celebrate midweek chart success after releasing their third studio album, Midnight Memories. There's little question whether the 1D boys will claim the official chart Number 1 on Sunday but will they conquer Emeli Sandé's title as the year's bestseller? Read more here.

Katy Perry VMA Red Carpet

Katy Perry's Geisha Goof: Katy Perry has garnered claims of "racial appropriation" after she performed at the AMAs dressed as a Japanese geisha complete with low-cut kimono, face paint and dancers wearing similar outfits running across a Japanese-themed set. Perry's stylist has defended the costume choice, saying it was a tribute to the culture Perry loves. We're still undecided: see for yourself here.

RIP Brian Griffin: Indeed, sadly it is true: the Family Guy writers decided the show needed a bit of a shake-up and so wrote an episode where beloved Griffin dog and aspiring writer Brian was killed after being hit by a car. Find out why. The episode aired in the US last weekend and saw fans respond in their devastated thousands, with some even signing a petition demanding that Seth MacFarlane et al. brought back what is arguably one of the show's strongest characters.

Rogen & Franco Spoof Kanye: A particular highlight of this week's news was Seth Rogen and James Franco's shot-for-shot parody of Kanye West's highly spoofable and cheesy new music video, 'Bound 2.' Watch Kanye's new video here [explicit]. Entitled 'Bound 3', the actors recreate the computer screensaver-style backdrops and jigging motorcycle with James Franco frowning and rapping whilst a topless Seth sits astride him as Kim Kardashian, fondling and posing. If you've had a trying week, this will definitely be something to perk you up. Just watch it.

The Day Of The Doctor: Doctor Who's fanbase was kicked by into speculating frenzy after Saturday's 50th anniversary special, 'The Day of the Doctor,' that saw Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt's Doctors come together in a mind-boggling one-off plotline. Now, fans' sights are set on the ever-nearer Christmas Day regeneration special which will address the ultimate DW conundrum: the regeneration rule. And what about Orla Brady joining the show? We know that Peter Capaldi will be coming in to take over the Doctor mantle from Smith but how the swap will be set up is a complete mystery. Read why and watch the teaser clip here.

Fifth Estate Flop: The Fifth Estate has come top of the list of this year's movie flops, i.e. films that have won back only a fraction of what they cost to make. What seemed like a perfect storm: the Oscar-winning Bill Condon, actor of the moment Benedict Cumberbatch and the topical current issue of Wikileaks and Julian Assange went belly-up when Assange distanced himself, critics ran a mile and people failed to show up at the box office. You will never believe whose film came second.

Anchorman 2 Premiere

Anchorman 2 Premieres Down Under: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues has received its first premiere in Sydney, Australia where Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner stepped out on to the Burgundy carpet. Exultant fans lined the streets waving "Stay Classy" placards and Ferrell led the premiere audience in a rendition of 'Afternoon Delight.' Watch the trailer here. In character as the sleazy yet loveable frontman Ron Burgundy, Ferrell is set to give lectures at Boston's Emerson College, renamed the Ron Burgundy School of Communication for the day, on how budding journalists ought to sculpt their hair.

Video Of The Week - Eminem's 'Rap God': What else could our top video of the week be than rapper Eminem's new music video 'Rap God; in which the rapper channels Max Headroom on disturbing 1980s TV screens. The song is taken from his recent comeback album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 which has recently returned to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.  Watch 'Rap God' here.
