A Week In Movies: 12 Years a Slave leads the pack, Depp is on set in L.A., plus peeks at Godzilla, romances, comedies and lemurs

12 Years a Slave

The big news this week is the further escalation of awards-season fever. Steve McQueen's drama 12 Years a Slave continues to lead the field as the British Academy Film Awards announced its Bafta nominations this week - just as the movie opens in the UK. Chiwetel Ejiofor is now the odds-on favourite for both Bafta and Oscar best actor awards. Read our 12 Years a Slave Movie Review here or find out more about the film's star Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp's new film Mortdecai finished shooting in London and moved to Los Angeles, where he was snapped on set surrounded by actresses in bikinis. The action comedy follows Depp's title character on a quest for stolen art and Nazi gold. Costars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Paul Bettany, have been joined in California by Aubrey Plaza, Oliver Platt and Jeff Goldblum. Take a look at our 'behind the scenes' photos of Johnny Depp filming Mortdecai.

The big new trailer this week is for the Godzilla remake starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Sally Hawkins. The trailer shows how director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) has taken a more human-focussed approach to the story, with eerily realistic effects work that looks pretty spectacular. The film opens in May. Click here to watch the Godzilla trailer.

In Secret

Elizabeth Olsen also stars in the period drama In Secret, based on the 19th century Emile Zola novel Therese Raquin, about a young woman in a loveless marriage to her cousin (Tom Felten) who then embarks on a daring affair with a sexy friend (Oscar Isaac). All under the watchful eye of her imperious aunt, played by Jessica Lange. It looks pretty intense, and opens in February. Watch 'In Secret' trailer here.

Evan Rachel Wood and Scott Speedman star in Barefoot, a rom-com about a free-spirited young woman and a slacker from a wealthy Southern family. The new trailer makes it look sexy and funny, with a strong supporting cast including JK Simmons, Kate Burton and Treat Williams. It opens in America on Valentine's Day. Take a look at the 'Barefoot' trailer here.

The Stag

The Irish adventure comedy The Stag sends a group of young guys into the wilderness for a bonding experience before one of them gets married. In the trailer it seems to be a bit ridiculous, but the promising fresh-faced cast includes Peter McDonald, Hugh O'Conor, Brian Gleeson, Michael Legge and Andrew Scott. It opens in Ireland and the UK in March. If you want to kn ow more about 'The Stag' click here.

And finally, a new trailer reveals that, despite the title, Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is not a wacky animated romp voiced by Sacha Baron Cohen. Instead, it's a Disney documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman following a team of scientists working to save the endangered leaping-dancing animals. Definitely one to watch on the Imax screen when it opens in April. Watch the 'Island of Lemurs: Madagascar' trailer.
