Iron Man 3

The big news in cinemas globally is the release of Iron Man 3, which doesn't open in the USA until next week. But audiences around the world are already watching Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow reprise their roles in the Marvel franchise, which will no doubt lead box office charts everywhere for a few weeks at least.

Meanwhile, we got our first glimpse of Iron Man's fellow Avenger Thor with the trailer for The Dark World, which opens late this summer. Chris Hemsworth is back as the Norse god, this time teaming up with his mischievous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) instead of fighting him. Natalie Portman is also back for what looks like a seriously epic blockbuster.

There's a new trailer for R.I.P.D., a supernatural cop thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as members of the "Rest In Peace Department", a group of policemen in the afterlife who protect the living from demons. It looks rather silly, like a witty variation on Men in Black. And Bridges is clearly having a ball.

The Way Way Back

From the writers of The Descendants, The Way Way Back looks like a snappy comedy with an amazing cast that includes Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph. They play rather colourful adults in the story of a teen (Liam James) coming of age over summer break. It looks pretty unmissable.

There are two big-name film festivals underway at the moment. Robert Redford himself came to introduce the second Sundance London Film and Music Festival, a selection of films from the Utah festival specialising in independent features and documentaries. And among all of the filmmakers at Sundance London this week were the iconic 1970s band the Eagles, presenting their documentary History of the Eagles: Part One.

Meanwhile in New York, the Tribeca Film Festival is drawing A-list stars to its red carpet. James Franco turned up at the premiere for The Director, a documentary he produced about Gucci designer Frida Giannini. Franco walked the carpet with the movie's director Christina Voros and Tribeca programmer Genna Terranova, taking time to sign autographs and pose for pictures.

Emma Roberts

Also at Tribeca, Emma Roberts wowed the crowd with a sexy blue dress that the paparazzi seemed unable to get enough of. She was accompanied by Adult World costar Evan Peters and director Scott Coffey as well as other cast and crew. But all eyes seemed to be on Emma, who in the film plays a university student who has plans to become a great poet but ends up working in an adult bookshop.
