A Week In Movies: Awards Buzz Continues To Build, Hemsworth Hits New York, Divergent Teases

Prisoners Poster

Awards season is cranking up a notch as some attention-grabbing performances land in cinemas. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal are getting praise for their gritty work in the unnerving thriller Prisoners, now showing in both America and Britain. And Cate Blanchett is radiant in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, which finally opens in the UK this week. Click here to read the Prisoners movie review or here for Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine review.

Fans of less high-brow entertainment may enjoy Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck in the online gaming thriller Runner Runner, which has just opened in the US and UK. You can read the Runner Runner movie review or go here for the Runner Runner trailer.

As his new Formula One movie Rush opens in America, Chris Hemsworth has been out on the streets of New York greeting his fans. After attending a screening of the film, he chatted with fans outside the Apple store, then stopped to sign autographs outside his hotel. His sequel Thor: The Dark World opens next month. Here's a video of Chris spotted at 'Rush' New York screening premiere. Here's Chris Hemsworth greeting fans outside the apple store in NY and later stopping for fan photos outside his hotel.

Dom Hemingway Movie Still

Jude Law also takes on an against-type role as the colourful ex-con Dom Hemingway. From filmmaker Richard Shepard (The Matador), the British black comedy looks lively and engaging. It costars Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir and Emilia Clarke and opens in November in the UK, and in the USA next spring. You can see the Dom Hemingway trailer here.

Daniel Radcliffe was the subject of the week's best rumour: that he may star in a biopic about Freddy Mercury that's being planned by surviving Queen bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor and written by Peter Morgan. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally slated to play the iconic singer, but recently dropped out. Read more about this unlikey casting rumour here.

Meanwhile, there's a new trailer for Radcliffe's next movie Kill Your Darlings, a dark drama about beat poets Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe), William Burroughs (Ben Foster), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan). The story of a real-life murder, the trailer promises another image-busting performance from Radcliffe. It opens in America next month and in Britain in November. Watch the Kill Your Darlings trailer.

Divergent Movie Still

And finally, we got our first glimpse of the anticipated franchise-launcher Divergent this week in a teaser trailer promising a thrilling story set in a dystopian future society. It looks a bit reminiscent of The Hunger Games, as it follows a young woman (Shailene Woodley) who goes against a totalitarian new world order. Costars include Kate Winslet, Theo James and Woodley's The Spectacular Now costar Miles Teller. It's out next spring. Click here to have a look at the early trailer for Divergent.
