Act Of Valour Review

Good
A simplistic script nearly undoes this energetic doc-style thriller, which stars US Navy Seals as, well, US Navy Seals on an ambitious mission to stop a cataclysmic terrorist attack. Despite some exciting action, the plotting and dialog are just too corny.

Long-time friends and colleagues Rorke and Dave assemble their team of experts to rescue an undercover agent (Sanchez) who's been kidnapped by a Central American gang. After decimating the baddies and rescuing the hostage, it becomes clear that the gang is linked to a vicious Chechen terrorist (Cottle) who's working with a notorious arms dealer Christo (Veadov) to attack America in a way that makes "9/11 seem like a walk in the park". While the clock ticks, the Seals travel the world and deploy all kinds of whizzy military gadgetry to stop the nefarious plan.

The Game Plan Review

OK
Sure, it's maudlin and manipulative, about as realistic towards professional sports as it is in its insights regarding human relationships. And yes, its wit borders on the buffoonish, with slapstick so regressive that the late Three Stooges are scoffing at its simplicity. True, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Roselyn Sanchez make an attractive onscreen couple, and little Madison Pettis is a fine Shirley Temple substitute, yet as a trio, they don't inspire much box office confidence. So why is it that Disney's family-meets-football fantasy The Game Plan is so effective? Even the most suspicious of cinephiles may find themselves welling up over the story of an egotistical pro quarterback and the darling dumpling of a daughter he never knew.

As a member of the fictional Boston Rebels, Joe Kingman (Johnson) is fixated on two things - winning and Elvis. His swanky Beantown bachelor pad is laden with memorabilia -- both his own and the King's -- and he loves his millionaire athlete lifestyle. One day, there's a knock on the door. It's a young girl named Peyton (Pettis), and she claims that Joe is her dad. Taken aback, the QB contacts his agent, Stella Peck (Kyra Sedgwick), and begs her to straighten out this mess. A little backwards glancing confirms paternity -- at least for the time being -- and Joe finds himself juggling the demands of the playoffs, the ribbing of his teammates, and the needs of his sudden offspring. When she expresses an interest in studying ballet, Joe sends the child to Monique Vasquez's (Sanchez) elite school. Yet newfound fatherhood is taking its toll, and just Joe's luck, the championship game is coming up.

Boat Trip Review

Terrible
Directors, screenwriters, and everyone else involved in making a movie have a singular task: make an audience believe in the world onscreen. I'll forgive a lot in a movie, if the characters and their conflicts hold my attention. Boat Trip never makes the effort to establish anything original. The filmmakers are selling you a used world at new world prices. In fact, their opinion of the audience's intelligence is borderline galling.

The plot is a shameless rip off of Some Like It Hot, modified for the Britney generation. Desperate for some female loving, two single guys (Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz) decide to go on a singles cruise. However, thanks to a malicious travel agent (Will Ferrell, smartly appearing unbilled) the two dolts unwillingly wind up on a gay cruise.

Chasing Papi Review

Bad
Director Linda Mendoza's debut film, Chasing Papi, works like this: The movie's three gorgeous Latina leads are dating the same hunky guy, whom they affectionately call Papi (Eduardo Verástegui)--but you already know this from the movie trailer. The women are going to bump into one another at Papi's house in Los Angeles--but you already know this from the horoscope that gets read during the movie's first 15 minutes. For some reason, Papi is going to be unconscious for most of the movie--which you've already figured out from the extended shot of the scotch he just used to chase down a handful of tranquilizers. And finally, the women are going to end up fighting over him and eventually learning something about themselves in the process--which you know because, well, this is what passes for comedy these days.

As if this wasn't enough, there's another plotline running through the movie. To get to Los Angeles in the first place, one of the women, Cici (Sofía Vergara), offers to drive her friend's boyfriend's car from Miami to Hollywood, where it is to be delivered to two guys in a parking lot. Sure enough, the two guys turn out to be criminals of some unspecified sort who get angry when they can't find a bag of cash that was stashed in the car. The FBI gets thrown into the mix and, apparently, fun and laughs are supposed to ensue.

Underclassman Review

Weak
In a memorable Chapelle's Show sketch, Dave Chapelle's "son" raves about Nick Cannon to his frustrated father, having just lost a role to the young star of Drumline and Love Don't Cost a Thing. "Nick Cannon's hilarious," the kid gushes, provoking his already enraged father: "I'm glad you think he's so goddamn hilarious because he just walked off with your school clothes money... I'm broke nigga, I'm broke!"

Cannon has another starring role in Underclassman, and the younger Chappelle might want to think long and hard about where his allegiances lie. Cannon, who also served as an executive producer, stars as a baby-faced bike cop who goes undercover at a California prep school to investigate a student's murder. He soon discovers that there are a lot more shady happenings at the posh school and that learning is fun at any age. Of course, it helps immeasurably if the sultry Roselyn Sanchez is your Spanish teacher, but I digress.

Boat Trip Review

Unbearable

Driven entirely by tedious clichés, vulgar stereotypes, tawdry and low-brow raunch-as-comedy gags, and the degrading, almost minstrel-show antics of a mugging, rubber-faced Cuba Gooding Jr., "Boat Trip" is a gay-themed movie aimed squarely and exclusively at stupid straight people.

The contrived mix-up plot finds Gooding and John Belushi-wannabe Horatio Sanz ("Saturday Night Live") trapped onboard a cruise ship full of gay men for a weeklong voyage, and writer-director Mort Nathan (who scripted the Farrelly Brothers' "Kingpin") finds endless excuses for them to act cartoonishly homosexual in order to score with the few women on board.

Gooding has fallen for the ship's dance instructor (Roselyn Sanchez) -- a steamy Latina who walks around in see-through linen tops and three pounds of eye shadow while professing "I don't care about makeup, I don't care about what I'm wearing." Meanwhile fat, ugly, loutish Sanz has the hots for a brain-dead bimbo (Playboy Playmate Victoria Silvstedt) from the "Swedish suntanning team" who was rescued from a shipwreck along with a dozen other swimsuit models. Inexplicably, she has the hots for him too -- not because there's anything attractive about him whatsoever, but because the director is transparently more interested in any excuse for bug-eyed boob shots than he is in anything remotely resembling story or humor.

Rush Hour 2 Review

Weak

When a high-concept action-comedy becomes a hit despite slapdash scripting and single joke themes weaved into an emaciated plot, the ball starts rolling toward the inevitable: An even lamer sequel.

Thus was born the half-baked, ham-fisted "Rush Hour 2," another odd-couple buddy cop picture pairing Hong Kong detective Jackie Chan, king of the kung-fu action-comedy, with LAPD putz Chris Tucker, high-pitched hyperactive buffoon.

In the 1998 original set in Los Angeles, Chan and Tucker went against orders to rescue the daughter of the Chinese consul. This time they start their own investigation (against orders) when a bomb goes off at the U.S. embassy while Tucker is on vacation in Hong Kong. What this bombing has to do with the plot about a Triad counterfeiting ring isn't readily apparent, but the two are connected by Zhang Ziyi (the beautiful teenage heroine of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"). She delivers the package bomb in the movie's opening scene and is wasted in the rest of the flick leading a gang of henchmen into ho-hum high-kicking combat with our heroes.
