Roots Manuva Video Interview
We recently caught up with Rodney Smith at Ninja Tune HQ in London. We talked about the new album "Slime and Reason", first single "Buff Nuff" and brand new single "Again and Again" as well as how this new record came together as well as Rodney's work on the 2005 Gorillaz album "Demon Days".
Rodney Smith aka Roots Manuva is back with his fourth album and Rodney's musical vision is as cutting and fresh as it has ever been.
Rodney Smith's inspiration for Slime and Reason has come from looking back to his roots, the music that moved him even before he heard hip hop.
"With this record I was trying to tune into that old Channel One, Studio One aesthetic. Lord knows what they were drinking, smoking or eating or what they were doing or what was on their mind but to me that was a special period in music. Today, with the technology that's available it's pretty easy to make generic music, music that sounds like everything else. But to tap into a unique aesthetic, to make a long player that is of its own world is a harder job. How do we make it have an individual sound?"
As is usual with Roots Manuva "Slime & Reason" isn't lacking in individuality. While it's a record that some press sources are comparing to his very successful "Run Come Save Me" for its depth and impact. "Slime & Reason" is as utterly unique as the mind of the man who created it.
