Actress Rooney Mara was ordered to turn up hungover to one of her final auditions for new thriller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as producers wanted to see the clean-cut star "a little more strung out".
The young beauty saw off competition from Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson to land the part of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of Stieg Larsson's hit Millennium trilogy novels, but she reveals it was her messy, drunken state which secured her the coveted role.
Mara, who pierced her nipples and dyed her hair jet black for the film, explains, "One night they (movie producers) called me up and asked me if I would go out the night before I was coming in (to audition) and get drunk. I did it. I went out and I think they had this idea... Everyone had a hard time picturing me as this person and they wanted me to come in looking a little more strung out, I guess. And I never drink so I was vomiting all night and I was definitely strung out."
But Mara insists she had no problem letting her hair down for one night because the weeks-long casting process had taken its toll on her nerves.
She says, "It had been two months and that point, it was kind of a relief to just get drunk."
