The Girl On The Train [La Fille Du RER] Review

Excellent
This understated drama really gets under the skin through vivid characters and situations. Finely skilled direction and acting makes it vividly real, like an extremely low-key thriller that grabs hold and won't let go.

Skater girl Jeanne (Dequenne) lives in a Paris suburb with her helpful mum Louise (Deneuve). When meets another skater, Franck (Duvauchelle), their romance develops quickly. And she decides to move in with him rather than take an offered job as a secretary for a legal firm headed by Samuel (Blanc), a renowned specialist in cases involving anti-Semitic violence who has a past connection with Jeanne's parents. But when things go wrong she does something that has severe consequences.

The Band's Visit Review

Good
A fan favorite at last year's Cannes as well as Israel's controversial entry in the foreign-language Oscar race (a category that notoriously picks a majority of sub-par films; this one didn't make the cut), Eran Kolirin's unassuming debut film, The Band's Visit, dispenses with culture critiques and ideologies in lieu of a good-natured set of episodes about stilted romances and mediocre comic riffs.

Ironically, mediocrity is exactly the thing Lieutenant Colonel Tawfiq (Sasson Gabai) is trying to avoid as he makes his way to Israel with the Alexandria Ceremonial Orchestra, a small policemen's orchestra from Egypt. Khaled (Saleh Bakri), his violinist, can't stop asking girls if they've heard of Chet Baker, a nuisance which Tawfiq blames for his band getting on a bus to Bet Hatikva instead of Petah Tikva. The minute they step off the bus in Hatikva it becomes crushingly apparent that they are on the sunny side of nowhere. A local café owner, Dina (Ronit Elkabetz), feeds the band and arranges for sleeping arrangements until the bus arrives the day after.

Late Marriage Review

Excellent
The man and the girl go to her bedroom. She says she wants to be a designer and shows him her sketches. Her talent is evident, and somewhere beneath her exotic good looks lies intelligence. They talk about their ideal mates. She says, without irony, that she wants to marry a rich man.

Welcome to the world of arranged marriages, as shown in director/writer's Dover Kosashvilli's compelling debut film, Late Marriage. A man in the middle of countless matrimonial negotiations, Zaza (Lior Loui Ashkenazi), is a 31-year-old doctorate Russian born student who can't settle on any woman despite the help of his relatives. That's because he's seeing (and supporting with his parents' money) an attractive, slightly older single mother, Judith (Ronit Elkabetz).
