Shock OSCAR winner Roman Polanski has finally delivered his acceptance speech - in a short statement.

The Pianist filmmaker - who bagged the Best Director gong at Sunday's prestigious ceremony (23MAR03) - had not been able to accept his honour in person due to the rape conviction which means he can never return to America.

He writes, "I am deeply moved to be rewarded for the work which relates to the events so close to my own life, the events that led me to comprehend that art can transform pain. I believe this still holds true today

"My most heartfelt thanks to the members of the Academy for this wonderful award."

Polanski had three good reasons to celebrate after the awards. As well as being crowned Best Director, his star Adrien Brody won Best Actor and the film was named Best Adapted Screenplay.
