The celebrity publication last year (02) claimed Polanski propositioned a Swedish beauty on the eve of his murdered wife Sharon Tate's funeral in 1969.
Polanski, who won a Best Director Oscar this year (03) for The Pianist, and lives in Paris because of longstanding rape charges against him in America, is hoping to testify via video link.
According to the Vanity Fair article, he made a sexual overture to the Swede at ELAINE's restaurant when he stopped in New York en route to the funeral of actress wife Tate, who was murdered by followers of cult leader Charles Manson when she was eight months pregnant.
Polanski - who is suing in London because the libel laws are tougher in Britain - denies he ever stopped in New York.
But the director will not travel to London because of extradition treaties between Britain and America, after he was charged in 1977 with the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. He agreed to plead guilty but fled the country while awaiting sentencing.14/07/2003 21:06
