It's rare, if not unprecedented, for the second season of a TV series that began on cable to move to broadcast television. But The Bible, which NBC announced on Monday that it had picked up from producer Mark Burnett and his wife and business partner Roma Downey, was no ordinary cable-TV series. As NBC noted in its announcement, the series debuted in March with 13 million viewers, and its final episode attracted 11.7 million -- nothing short of phenomenal for cable, where a show that draws one million viewers is considered a hit. Additionally, NBC observed that the home-video box set of the series, which has a suggested retail price of $70 on Blu-ray Disc, has sold over one million units since going on sale three months ago. Today's (Tuesday) New York Times indicated that a bidding war was waged between NBC and The History Channel, which aired the original series, with NBC's bid significantly above History's. Terms of The Deal were not disclosed. The new series will reportedly deal with the efforts of the apostles and their followers to survive Roman oppression following the crucifixion of Christ. Burnett is already the producer of NBC's biggest ratings hit, The Voice. He is also the producer of Survivor on CBS and Shark Tank on ABC.
