A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master Review

Weak
Renny Harlin's big break came with this film, an otherwise forgettable entry into the Nightmare on Elm Street series. Freddy was killed and buried on consecrated ground in #3, but he's resurrected to terrorize teens once again -- notably Kristin (with Tuesday Knight taking over for episode 3's Patricia Arquette), who can pull her friends into her dreams at will. Not much to see here except for the occasional '80s big hairdo and some decent gore shots. The dream girl inside one kid's waterbed is near classic. (Sez Freddy: "How's this for a wet dream?")

A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors Review

Good
The Nightmare continues, with two newcomers who would turn out to be fairly big stars -- Patricia Arquette and "Larry" Fishburne (dig the beard!) -- plus appearances from two classic actors whose presence is always welcome -- Dick Cavett and Zsa Zsa Gabor. This time, Heather Langenkamp from Nightmare #1 is a counselor to troubled teens, and Freddie decides to try to get them to commit suicide, thus doing in his old nemesis and a bunch of rotten kids at the same time. Far better than Nightmare #2, this one has a serpentine Freddie vomiting up a half-eaten, perpetually screaming Arquette. Can you not love this?

The Caveman's Valentine Review

OK

"The Caveman's Valentine" is a terrible title for an intelligent movie. It sounds like some B-grade fright flick from the 1950s with screaming blondes in strategically torn outfits being abducted by ape men found living on an uncharted island.

As it turns out, this "Caveman's Valentine" is actually a provocative, stylized psychological thriller/murder mystery about a one-time musical genius long ago driven out of a normal life and into homelessness by acute paranoid schizophrenia.

Played with an astonishing array of nuance by cinematic chameleon Samuel L. Jackson, Romulus Ledbetter is a disheveled, massively dreadlocked, ranting but misunderstood madman. His mind has become a tangled, delusional plane where an unseen evil -- an omnipotent adversary with powerful ray weapons -- conspires against him to take over the world.
