Rock stalwart Rod Stewart is actually a well known classical composer, according to a survey of 1,000 British youngsters.

Nearly half of the children polled admitted they couldn't name any classical composers, but a large proportion of those went for the gravel-voiced DA YA THINK I'M SEXY? hitmaker when pushed for an answer.

Other stars the 10 to 19-year-olds believe wrote symphonies and sonatas include Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Charlotte Church, painter CLAUDE MONET and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

A spokesman for British finance firm CLERICAL MEDICAL, who conducted the survey, says, "Young people are obviously confused about classical music if they think Rod Stewart's classical.

"We can only assume they've heard mum or dad saying they think his hit MAGGIE MAY's an all-time classic."
