In another incident involving live television -- only in this country -- a deranged man attempted to commit suicide in Rockefeller Plaza outside the NBC Today show studio while the show was in progress. NBC later issued a statement saying that we have strict security protocols in place to protect visitors to the Today show and those procedures were followed and effective. We are very grateful for the actions of our security team and the NYPD that no others visiting the show were harmed in the incident. On Friday, the New York Post published a front-page headline reading: MORNING GORY: Man tries suicide at 'Today' show... and it's not Matt Lauer, an apparent reference to Lauer's continued image -- and ratings -- problems following the firing of Ann Curry as cohost. The headline was strongly condemned by Advertising Age columnist Simon Dumenco, who said that it made light of a disturbed man's attempted suicide. ... Keepin' it classy as always, New York Post.
