Actor Robert Redford is spearheading a campaign against horse slaughterhouses in the U.S.
The Sting star, who is a keen environmentalist, is outraged by plans to allow horse abattoirs to operate in the States for the first time in six years.
He has announced the creation of a new campaign group, the Foundation to Protect New Mexico Wildlife, and is backing a lawsuit by the Humane Society to block the opening of a horse slaughterhouse next month (Aug13).
Redford says, "Horse slaughter has no place in our culture. It is cruel, inhumane, and perpetuates abuse and neglect of these beloved animals."
The abattoirs will be used to produce horse meat for consumption overseas.
