Robert Redford has been honoured in Santa Monica, California, for his lifelong environmental efforts - he's had a new 'green' resource centre named after him.

The NATURAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL has named its new headquarters THE ROBERT REDFORD BUILDING. The centre features solar-powered panels and rainwater-filled toilets.

A thrilled Redford has announced he's using his latest honour to increase his personal efforts to raise awareness of the erosion of California's coastline.

He says, "I grew up here and I saw LA sort of begin to disappear into the sea because of a lack of land use planning or environmental protection."

And the movie star hopes people think of him when they use the new centre's facilities: "I was drawn to the idea of people thinking of me when they flush their environmentally-safe toilets."
