Guys And Dolls Review

Very Good
Marlon Brando's musical debut. Really. And he isn't half-bad. Can you imagine Brando in the same role today? Do yourself a favor and check out Guys And Dolls -- an American classic including the tunes "Luck Be a Lady Tonight" and "I Got the Horse Right Here."

The Wild One Review

Good
When rival motorcycle gangs descend upon a small town, chaos ensues. A great look at how two-wheelers got demonized in the 1950s, featuring what now looks like a cutesy performance by Marlon Brando, before his career went belly up. While it's a reluctant classic and was edgy in its time (and banned for 12 years in Finland), on the whole, The Wild One is now mostly silly.

Written On The Wind Review

Weak
It's all-star soaps in Douglas Sirk's brilliantly saccharine Written on the Wind, with show-stealer Dorothy Malone (way too old for the part) playing a sex-crazed gal trying to wreak havoc among her blueblood family and friends. This all shakes down (after considerable effort at setting up the loony players) as to an accusation of infidelity when Malone suggest her brother's (Robert Stack) goody-goody best friend (RockHudson) knocked up Stack's wife (Lauren Bacall) -- because Stack is sterile! Yoiks. In the end it's all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Love Me Or Leave Me Review

Good
This overblown biopic of singer Ruth Etting (Doris Day) follows the Star Is Born template pretty faithfully, only with the spin of James Cagney as a gangster underwriter, not to mention historical underpinnings.

Cagney's work here is fairly rote, and Day's portrayal of Etting isn't exactly spot-on, but both are good enough for the job they've been tasked with. The problem comes from the abrasive repetition in the story, which has Cagney's Martin Snyder continuously beating and shooting people that stand in Etting's way, then nurturing her all lovey-dovey like. Two hours of this is just too much, even if it does feature a handful of Etting hits (including the title number).
