Dreamworks' newest animated feature Home has topped the box office this weekend, taking an estimated $54 million. The film's opening weekend success means it is already a hit for studio DreamWorks, which has had a difficult time as of late, with recent releases under performing at the box office.

HomeHome has topped the US box office.

The film tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a young girl named Tip and Oh, an outcast alien from outer space. Pop star Rihanna provides the voice of Tip, while ‘Big Bang Theory’ star Jim Parsons is her unlikely accomplice.

Overseas the film is reported to have also impressed taking $48 million since its release on Thursday. At the US box office Home’s success meant last week’s number one, Insurgent was knocked down two places to the number three spot after falling 58 percent to make $22 million this weekend.

Home’s success is important for studio DreamWorks who earlier this year announced a massive restructuring and creative overhaul which resulted in 500 workers being laid off. The film is the studio’s only release this year, making its box office performance all the more important.

Last year DreamWorks suffered a financial disappointment with Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which grossed just $111.5 million at the box office. The animated feature had a budget of $145 million, but its poor box office performance forced DreamWorks to take a $57 million write-down on behalf of the film
