Robert De Niro is set to be honoured at the upcoming 16th annual Hollywood Film Awards as the recipient of one of the event's top prizes.

The Oscar-winning star will pick up the coveted Hollywood Supporting Actor Award after receiving critical acclaim for his turn in new movie Silver Linings Playbook.

Event founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu says, "Robert De Niro is not only highly regarded for his body of work as an actor, producer, and director, but also for the passion, integrity, and dedication he brings to his performances on camera, as well as his intense off-camera preparation and study of the characters he brings to life. His performance in Silver Linings Playbook is outstanding."

De Niro follows in the footsteps of previous recipients including Ben Affleck, John Travolta and Sam Rockwell.

He will receive the trophy at a gala ceremony on 22 October (12) at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
