Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, soon to be seen together in cop drama Righteous Kill, have been voted the ultimate pairing in film.

Though the New York actors have only ever shared one scene together, in 1995's Heat, they have topped a poll of users to find cinema's greatest double act.

Righteous Kill, released on Friday September 26th, sees The Godfather II actors - who were never onscreen together in that epic - as veteran Big Apple cops revisiting an old case after a spate of killings.

And they pulled in 16 per cent of the vote of more than 1,500 LoveFilm users to be named the best film duo.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who first appeared together in much-loved TV series Spaced, before starring in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, finished in a close second with 15 per cent of the vote.

Meanwhile, Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta's revisiting of their Pulp Fiction double act in 2003's Basic was sufficient to secure them third place.

"It's great when our favourite actors team up once, let alone repeatedly, so it's fantastic to see De Niro and Pacino back on the big screen together where they rightly belong," said Fliss White, head of brand marketing at LoveFilm.

"With winning combinations packing a powerful punch at the box office, it'll be interesting to see who's on the next Hollywood reunion list."
