Robert De Niro thanks fans and friends for helping him attack prostate cancer head on - because they came forward with their own ways of terminating the disease.

The movie star went public about his health problem last year (03) after watching his father die of the disease - and he urges others to do the same, because people want to help.

Two friends who came forward to help De Niro beat cancer were survivors, former New York Mayor RUDY GIULIANO and NEW YORK YANKEES baseball boss Joe TORRE.

De Niro says, "I didn't want it to come out in some sleazy way. I was fortunate enough by going public with it that people would give me the results of what they had done so it helped me make a decision."

De Niro's cancer is now in remission.
