Robbie Williams hit ANGELS has been crowned the best single which should have topped the charts but never did, in a poll for music channel VH1.

The popular ballad - which only managed to reach number four in Britain in December 1997 - beat Savage Garden's TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY and Aerosmith’s I DON'T WANT TO MISS A THING, in second and third respectively.

Nearly 30,000 votes were cast by VH1 viewers and readers of The Sun newspaper in the poll.

The former TAKE THAT singer has had four number one hits since, but Angels - now arguably his most famous song - was kept off the top spot by children's cartoon characters THE TELETUBBIES' EH OH!

The top ten "Ones That Never Were Top 20" is as follows:

1. ROBBIE WILLIAMS - ANGELS

2. SAVAGE GARDEN - TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY

3. AEROSMITH - I DON’T WANT TO MISS A THING

4. ULTRAVOX - VIENNA

5. MADONNA - RAY OF LIGHT

6. BON JOVI - LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER

7. OASIS - WONDERWALL

8. QUEEN - RADIO GA GA

9. MICHAEL JACKSON - THRILLER

10. BON JOVI - ALWAYS.
