Rihanna’s full of the festive spirit this year and has dipped into her pot of gold, to donate some cash to a Barbados hospital in memory of her grandmother Clara ‘Dolly’ Braithwaite. Rhi-Rhi’s kindly donated $1.75 million (£1.08 million) to the hospital’s radiotherapy unit, which has been renamed the Clara Braithwaite Center For Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.

The Barbados-born pop star made the announcement over the weekend, when she paid a visit to the hospital, accompanied by her mother, Monica and her father Lionel Braithwaite. The money donated will pay for three pieces of medical equipment, according to BBC News and Rihanna – real name Robyn Fenty, said “I believe that this will have a huge impact on the people of Barbados. This was all done to save lives or at least extend them.”

Rihanna was very close to her late grandmother, who passed away earlier this year, on June 30. She had taken a break from her European tour so that she could be with her grandmother, whilst she was in hospital. When her grandmother died, Rihanna posted a number of messages on her Twitter page, alomg with photographs of her and Dolly together, one of which read “my heart smiled and cried all at once.” Rihanna was recently named as the third highest-earning female in the music industry, having raked in $53 million in 2012, according to Forbes magazine.
