Despite a record five nominations, Ricky Gervais' comic creation EXTRAS lost out after only scooping two gongs at the British Comedy Awards in London last night (14DEC05).
The funnyman admitted at the start of the glitzy ceremony that he didn't hold much hope for an accolade, and almost missed the prize-giving altogether.
He said, "I'm not confident about this award show. I nearly didn't come tonight...I've got quite a bit of this plastic at home."
But co-star Ashley Jensen, who plays MAGGIE in Extras, didn't prove quite so unlucky, walking away with Best Comedy Actress and Best Newcomer.
Receiving her award, she said, "I'm a wee bit speechless and anyone who knows me knows that's an accomplishment.
Later she added, "I'm completely blown away by the whole thing. It's a dream. I'm happy I won but the prize was getting my job so anything else is a big bonus."
Other winners included long-running cartoon series The Simpsons, which triumphed for a second successive year with a Best International Comedy award, and Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne talent contest The X Factor, which picked up Best Comedy Entertainment Programme.
