Rapper Rick Ross has hired 24-hour armed security to protect him after surviving a drive-by shooting in Florida on Monday (28Jan13).

The Hustlin' hitmaker crashed his Rolls-Royce into a building in Fort Lauderdale after a gunman in another vehicle peppered his car with bullets. None of the gunshots actually hit the vehicle and neither Ross nor his female companion, Shateria L. Moragne-el, were injured.

The close call, which took place on his 37th birthday, has prompted the hip-hop heavyweight to beef up his security and now he is watched over around-the-clock, according to Tmz.com.

Meanwhile, rapper Pusha T has assured fans Ross is doing Ok following the incident after contacting a mutual pal, a mixing engineer the pair had worked with, to check on the shaken star.

Pusha explains, "He (the mutual friend) was just like, 'Yeah, he's just layin' back (relaxing).' That was enough (assurance) for me."

Ironically, Ross raps, "I can't believe I'm alive" on a new remix of Kendrick Lamar's track B**ch Don't Kill My Vibe, which was released online late on Monday - although the lyrics are said to have been recorded prior to the shooting.
