Dope Trailer

Malcolm Adecombi is not having such a good time in high school. He's constantly bullied for being a geek, as are his best friends Diggy and Jib. But things aren't about to get any easier as he approaches college. He's determined to get the best grades possible and hopefully go to Harvard, but a sexual awakening, a desire to be seen as cool and his love of music might just get in the way. Living in the tough suburb of The Bottoms in Inglewood, California, there's a lot of underground gang and drug crime happening, nonetheless when he is invited to a secret party he is determined to go and prove himself. As bad luck would have it, hitting up an illegal gathering can only see his life go from bad to worse, and when he inadvertently gets caught up in some serious trouble, he has to do some hard thinking to get himself out.

Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is not a cool kid. Growing up as a geek in 1990s Inglewood, CA, is a sure-fire way to ensure that you are far from cool. He spends his time working hard on his school work and desperately trying to get into Harvard University - all while living in The Bottoms neighbourhood, surrounded by gangsters and drug dealers. However, a sudden invitation to a small underground party for him and his friends, leads him into a strange adventure in the world of hip hop during its golden age, and establishes him as DOPE, a character who may truly be his actual self.

Talk To Me Review

Very Good
Two biopics opened this year (within weeks of each other) that analyze gifted men who rise to powerful positions in their chosen professions before eroding beneath the fringe benefits of their unexpected success. Yet beyond that thematic connection, the movies could not be more different.

The first, Leon Ichaso's El Cantante, scrubs away crucial details when recollecting the life of salsa singer Hector Lavoe, leaving an empty shell that begs for further insight. But Talk to Me takes the opposite approach, constructing such a complete image of proud and passionate radio host Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene that we immediately understand why the deep flaws in his personality could only have led to his downfall.

Brown Sugar Review

Weak
To completely understand Brown Sugar requires an appreciation of what hip-hop means to the lives of those who listen to it. Since I'm not well versed in hip-hop music and culture, I didn't understand some parts of the film that the majority of my audience clearly did. I can, however, recognize good filmmaking when I see it. And unfortunately, Brown Sugar is not sweet enough to liven up its predictable story and will leave even fans of hip-hop sorely disappointed.

The film's setup is simple. Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan) have been very close friends since childhood, when hip-hop was just coming into its own. Dre is a well-known hip-hop record producer who is unhappy with his job and is about to get married. Sidney is a magazine editor who is working on a book about the origins of hip-hop and cannot find the right man to fit her groove. She is of course secretly in love with Dre because he is the only man who can connect with her and her music, and Dre is secretly in love with Sidney because she is the only woman who will support his dreams. Both Dre and Sidney have problems with the other's initial choice of spouse (Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe).

The Wood Review

OK
Another week, another coming of age story. Turns out timing can be everything, and The Wood's unfortunate release one week after the somewhat similar (but much better) American Pie will leave viewers drawing unfavorable comparisons between the two.

The story behind The Wood, as in Inglewood, California, follows three best friends on the day when one is set to be married. Of course, he's having the jitters, so they reminisce about their childhood growing up together and chasing girls, which, basically, is what they all still want to be doing.
