Bruce Willis is to star in a Broadway adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel Misery. The action star will make his debut opposite stage veteran Elizabeth Marvel (House of Cards) in a play written by the two-time Academy Award winner William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), who penned the 1990 movie adaptation of the novel, which won Kathy Bates her Oscar.

Willis will play the housebound novelist Paul Sheddon (played by James Caan in the movie version) who becomes a prisoner of his crazed number one fan after she rescues him from a car accident.

Will Frears has signed on to direct the play, which is pencilled in for a limited run in the fall. The theater is yet to be announced.

Misery will be produced by Warner Bros Theatre Ventures, which is becoming more active in theatre production. The division is behind the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical currently running in London's West End and also co-produced the Olivier Award winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on Broadway. Warners' other credits include The Bridge of Madison County and Elf.

Willis last appeared on a New York stage when he stood in for Ed Harris in the lead of Sam Shepard's Fool for Love in 1983.

Misery had its world premiere at Bucks County Playhouse in the fall of 2012.

In terms of movies, Willis is currently shooting the thriller Extraction about a CIA operative kidnapped by a group of terrorist.
