Veteran singer/songwriter Richard Thompson was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in London yesterday (06FEB06).

The FAIRPORT CONVENTION star was presented with his award by Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler. He then performed at the event solo and with Fairport Convention.

Elsewhere, Fairport Convention's Liege And Lief was voted the Most Influential Folk Album Of All Time by Radio 2 listeners and the band's Ashley Hutchings won the Good Tradition award, which he picked up from British actor Sylvester McCoy.

Actor Bob Hoskins presented John Tams with the Folk Singer Of The Year award, Julie Fowlis was named Best Newcomer, and Kate Rusby won Best Live Act.

Best Original Song went to Chris Wood and Hugh Lupton for ONE IN A MILLION, while MICHAEL McGOLDRICK won Musician Of The Year.
