Idris Elba's 'Bastille Day' To Be Pulled From French Cinemas

Idris Elba Richard Madden

Idris Elba’s latest film Bastille Day is to be pulled from French cinemas at the request of production company StudioCanal. After Thursday’s terror attack in Nice, which left more than 80 people dead and more than 50 injured, the studio had pulled ads for the film, which had been released in cinemas the day before.

Branagh Live: Romeo & Juliet Trailer

The story of Romeo and Juliet is one of unconditional love that shows how far two people will go in order to be together for eternity. The two families the Montagues and the Capulets are at war with each other and both Romeo the son of Montague and Juliet the daughter of Capulet fall in love with each other which is strictly forbidden because of the family's ongoing feud.

Bastille Day Review

OK

An attempt to muscle in on Luc Besson's Taken-style of thriller, this is an odd mix of French setting, American characters and British cast and crew. The inclusion of hugely current issues like immigration, terrorism and capitalistic excess adds the illusion that the movie is actually about something. So while the plot is preposterous, the film has an edgier, more jaggedly comical sensibility that makes it entertaining.

It's set in Paris, where the gifted American pickpocket Michael (Richard Madden) becomes a terrorist suspect when he inadvertently steals a bomb from a the hapless young Zoe (Charlotte Le Bon), roped into planting it by her anti-fascist boyfriend. On Michael's trail is the bullheaded CIA operative Briar (Idris Elba), who has just been transferred to Paris due to his insubordinate attitude. His new boss (Kelly Reilly) is an old friend who vouches for him, then quickly regrets that decision when he goes rogue and teams up with the fugitive Michael to track down the real villain. They're pursued all over the city by local police chief Victor (Jose Garcia) and his fearsome sidekick Rafi (Thierry Godard), oblivious to the fact that the men they're chasing are actually trying to save Paris from something catastrophic.

The plot itself is fairly simple, but the film is assembled in a way that makes everything look far more complicated than it actually is. Action mayhem breaks out at every turn, with impressively full-on stuntwork, crashing chase scenes and lots of shootouts. A fistfight in the back of a careering van is particularly rough and tumble, as it were. And with such villainous baddies, the filmmakers believe they are justified in killing off dozens of faceless henchmen. One dares to show a glimmer of a conscience, but that doesn't save him.

Bastille Day Trailer

Paris is known to have problems with pickpockets and Michael Mason is one of the cities sneakiest thieves and now he's accidentally led himself in more trouble than he can deal with.

When Mason lifts a bag from someone, he opens it to discover it contains a whole world of trouble - a bomb. Hot on Mason's tale is a CIA field agent by the name of Sean Briar. The CIA's records show that there's far more to Mason's criminal record than just pickpocketing people but Briar soon learns that there's far more to this case than Mason and he is probably just a fall guy.

Together the thief and CIA operative must go off the books and find the real culprit behind a terrorist threat. As the duo dig deeper into the criminal underworld, they soon find themselves with ever increasing amounts of enemies - on both sides of the law. Whatever unfolds, we know this Bastille Day won't be a usual one.

A Promise Review

Good

When a French filmmaker travels to Belgium to film a German story in English, it's hardly surprising that the resulting movie feels somewhat awkward. Fortunately, the filmmaker in question is the detail-oriented Patrice Leconte (The Widow of Saint-Pierre), and he's working with a fine British cast that makes the most of even the stiffest dialogue. It may all feel rather superficial, but the plot is packed with surprising twists and some real emotion.

It's set in 1912 Germany, where young engineer Friedrich (Game of Thrones' Richard Madden) quickly impresses his sardonic boss Karl (Alan Rickman) at the steelworks, and is promoted to be his personal assistant. When Karl is bedridden with a heart problem, Friedrich moves from his squalid garret into Karl's elegant manor house, taking on extra responsibilities as a tutor for Karl's son. He also catches the eye of Karl's much younger wife Lotte (Rebecca Hall). Their attraction is clearly mutual, but both are naturally afraid to say anything about it. And when they finally do, it's just as Friedrich is about to head off to Mexico for a two-year assignment. So they vow to wait to act on their forbidden love until he gets back. Then the Great War breaks out, and their reunion is delayed, seemingly indefinitely.

Intriguingly, there's a sense that Karl invited Friedrich into his home as a replacement both at the factory and as Lotte's husband. This emerges mainly in subtext through Rickman's clever performance, which bristles with wit and emotional energy, effortlessly stealing the focus from the central romance. Madden is suitably likeable as Friedrich, although it's difficult to understand why he is so besotted with Lotte when he already has a devoted girlfriend (Shannon Tarbet) whose only flaw seems to be that she's a bit clingy. Meanwhile, Hall gives a terrific turn as a young woman whose stiff upper lift obscures a near-bursting passion, which she channels into haunting piano playing that echoes through the house, tormenting both Karl and Friedrich.

A Week In News: Batman Revealed, Baldwin Busted, An Elevator Bust-Up

Nicole Kidman Cannes 2014

Cannes Panning: We'd love to say we were starting the round-up on a high with the Cannes Film Festival but unfortunately for new royal biopic Grace of Monaco, there is no good news to be found. The Nicole Kidman-starring true story dramatization has been almost universally crushed by Cannes critics who found the acting wooden, the script trite and the entire picture worse than the much-slated Diana pic. You can watch the trailer here though - it's worth it for the beautiful costumes and idyllic tax-haven setting.

Baldwin Busted: Alec Baldwin should probably sneak off to some meditation resort in the mountains for the next few months until this latest debacle blows over. The hot-headed actor and TV host, who is known for his many altercations with paps, had a run-in with police this week when he was caught riding his bicycle the wrong way down a busy New York street and flew into a rage when the cops asked to see his ID. It didn't end well for the 30 Rock star: read about all the drama here.

Disney's 1950 animated take on the tale is probably the most well-known version of the story, which has its roots in 17th century folklore, and the studios is set to reimagine the legend for a modern audience with actors instead of animation.

Cinderella - Teaser Trailer

Everyone is familiar with the classic fairy tale of Cinderella. Cinderella lives a mundane life doing whatever her evil step-mothers tell her to do, and all she dreams of is going to the ball and one day a fairy Godmother makes this wish come true and she lives happily ever after.

In 2015, Cinderella will have a new reimagining via Disney who have previously made a cartoon film, telling the story. This version is going to be live action and will star Lily James (Downton Abbey, Wrath Of The Titans) as Cinderella, Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones, A promise) as Prince Charming, Cate Blanchett (The Lord Of The Rings franchise, Hanna) as Lady Tremaine and Helena Bonham Carter (Les Misérables, Fight Club) as The Fairy Godmother. Given the war-driven fantasy works some of these actors have been in (namely Blanchett in Lord Of The Rings and Madden in Game Of Thrones), can we expect an element of this in this new Cinderella film? Probably not, but it should still be a fun film at the very least for both children new to the story, and people who'll remember seeing the previous version.

The film is directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh who you may know best for playing Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets, but he has also had great success directing films. A recent example being 2011's Thor.

Discovery Still Maintains Regular Themes In First Scripted Show 'Klondike'

Richard Madden

Discovery Channel will be awaiting intently to see if the network's first scripted television show will be received positively by viewers.

The three part miniseries called 'Klondike', which will premiere this Monday, sticks with what Discovery do best, TV shows about the great outdoors.

The series will follow the true story of gold rushers flocking to Yukon in the late 18th century, 1899 to be exact, to try and find a fortune in gold.

Klondike Trailer

When news gets round about a gold discovery in the Klondike region of the Yukon, Canada in 1897, it becomes one of the last great gold rushes in history. Bill Haskell and Byron Epstein are two hopeful travellers with an ambition of wealth who travel up to Dawson City (often dubbed 'The Paris of the North') to receive their fortune. However, digging up a life of luxury becomes less straightforward as they are forced to face bitter sub-zero temperatures, gold-digging temptresses and men who won't think twice about killing for profit. Making an easy fortune is one thing; surviving long enough to use it is another.

Production Begins On 'Cinderella' - Disney's First Ever Live Action Feature

Lily James Richard Madden Cate Blanchett Helena Bonham Carter

Disney’s first live action feature – an adaptation of Cinderella, starring Downton Abbey star Lily James has been attracting buzz for several months. Today, the studio announced the start of principle photography on the film, which is directed by Award-nominee Kenneth Branagh (Jack Ryan, Thor) and will also feature a star-studded cast in the supporting roles. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (The Aviator) and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) have both signed on to play the stepmother Lady Tremaine and the Prince, respectively. Helena Bonham Carter, playing against type this time, will portray the Fairy Godmother.

The film will be a reimagining of the classic Disney animation.

It seems that Disney are throwing all their resources behind their first live-action feature effort and have enlisted Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Elysium), Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), David Barron (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Jack Ryan) to produce the film, based on a screenplay by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Golden Compass).

David Benioff Reflects On Game Of Thrones 'The Red Wedding' Fall Out

Richard Madden

Game Of Thrones showrunner David Benioff has been reflecting on the reaction to the recent shocking goings-on in his series. The Red Wedding saw not one, but two main characters killed off in dramatic – and graphic – fashion, with Robb Stark and his mother Catelyn both getting the chop, as well as his pregnant wife and all of the rebellion leader’s men, culled in a brutal massacre.

“It’s weird to say, ‘Oh, it went great’” said Benioff of the brutal scene, which occurred during a wedding. “Because we’re not just killing characters. We’re losing these actors who have been with us since the beginning. It’s hard, because you love the actors. But it goes back to that first season, that some of the people we loved the most, whether Jason Momoa or Sean Bean [played characters that were killed off].”

Reflecting on why Twitter exploded and Game Of Thrones fans went into over drive at the incident, Benioff commented “In the book, when the band starts playing Rains of Castamere, you know something bad is going to happen. It’s the strongest physical reaction I’ve ever had to reading anything. I didn’t want to turn the page because you know something horrible is going to happen and you can’t quite believe it and you don’t want it to happen.” He added “You spend so much time with these characters before then. In the show, we’ve [spent more time focused on] Robb than in the books, mainly because we love Richard Madden as an actor. You look back to the death of Adriana on The Sopranos, that was powerful because you had spent years with her.”
