A Very Serious Person Review

OK
Charles Busch is best known as a comedic playwright, but sometimes he takes his shows to the big screen and turns them into small-scale but entertaining oddities, Psycho Beach Party and Die, Mommie, Die being the best examples. A Very Serious Person was actually written as a screenplay, but it feels like a play: a few well-drawn characters interacting mainly within the confines of a beach-town house over the course of one meaningful summer.

The house belongs to Mrs. Aaronson (Polly Bergen), a feisty old woman who has a terminal illness and knows this will be her last summer. She's invited her 13-year-old grandson Gil (P.J. Verhoest) to spend it with her and her longtime maid and helper Betty (Dana Ivey). Gil is an interesting kid, an arts and crafts specialist who loves watching Gone With the Wind and dressing up. He's clearly on his way to being gay, and he knows it, although he's not quite sure what to do with that knowledge. Mrs. Aaronson indulges him. For her, it's not an issue. She just wishes he'd go outside long enough to learn how to swim.

True Love Review

Weak
Nancy Savoca's tale of a nuptials-planning that looks doomed from the start isn't nearly as much fun as Dogfight, her best and best-known work. Ultimately, much-needed humor is displaced by coarse language, which doesn't serve to make a would-be romantic comedy very funny. Tepid at best.

The 24 Hour Woman Review

OK
Rosie Perez annoys less than usual in this waste of celluloid, about a TV producer so driven, even a pregnancy won't stop her! Flat and limp for a supposed comedy, The 24 Hour Woman should have quit after 20 minutes.

Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai Review

Excellent
Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai embodies a variety of genres from Mobster to Urban to Martial Arts. Jarmusch, critically acclaimed for Mystery Train (1989) and Stranger Than Paradise (1984), stays true to his uniquely languid and methodical style in telling the fascinating story of Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker - The Crying Game, Phenomenon), a contract killer who has isolated himself from society by taking refuge in a shack atop an inner city rooftop that he shares with a flock of pigeons.

Ghost Dog studies the early eighteenth century Japanese warrior code from the book, Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai, and the story is told as a sequence of verses from the ancient text. Each morning he bows to the altar he has constructed and practices the ancient disciplines of the samurai training. In the spirit of the ancient warriors, he has pledged his loyalty to a single master, a small-time mobster named Louie (John Tormey - Kiss Me Guido, Jungle 2 Jungle), who saved Ghost Dog's life when he was young. As an assassin, Ghost Dog communicates only via carrier pigeon and moves through the night like a phantom, killing with the skill and speed of a true Samurai.
