LORD Richard Attenborough made his first public appearance at the BAFTA awards since the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster killed his 14-year-old granddaughter.

The 81-year-old Gandhi director, whose daughter JANE and her mother-in-law are still missing from the 26 December (04) tragedy, attended the ceremony in London's Odeon Leicester Square on Saturday night (12FEB05) despite being in the throes of grief for his lost family.

A source says, "There were lots of old friends there showing him how much they cared."
