Reverend and The Makers frontman John McClure has announced his side project MONGREL will be touring next year.

The new band comprises of McClure, plus Drew McConnell from Babyshambles, former Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson, Joe Moskow and LOWKEY.

McClure says he wanted to fuse indie and hip hop on the band's debut album BETTER THAN HEAVY.

He spoke to BBC 6 Music about the involvement of Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate on the album's title track.

"I just fancied doing something a little bit different so I invited him to come and play," he said, "because he was in England at the time and he came and played the ngoni, which is a small one or two string African instrument. He's a genius man so it was an honour."

He added that the band want to tackle subjects which "have been shied away from by almost everyone really".

The Mongrel tour kicks off at the Norwich Waterfront on February 1st and ends at the Scala on February 18th.
