Flower And Snake Review

Weak
Takashi Ishii is widely recognized as the master of intellectually challenging Japanese erotica. He's also pretty freaky.

In Flower and Snake, his imagination really runs wild, putting one woman through an outrageous obstacle course of sexual perversion that you won't soon forget. Is it intellectually challenging? Maybe. Is it sexy? That's for you to decide. Either way, it's an eyeful.

The Bird People In China Review

Very Good
If you know famed Japanese director Takashi Miike for his long string of ultraviolent Yakuza gorefests and stories of unspeakable sexual perversion, you'll be shocked -- in a dreamy, Zen-like way -- by The Bird People in China, a strange aberration in the Miike oeuvre that's soft, sensitive, and deeply moving. No human entrails were spilled in the making of this movie.

This is a road picture, a very bumpy road picture, featuring two Japanese men who make their way to a primitive corner of China's remote Yunnan province in search of a potentially valuable vein of jade that's just waiting to be mined. Yuppie businessman Wada (Masahiro Motoki) thinks he's traveling alone. Little does he know he's being shadowed by Ujiie (Renji Ishibashi), a yakuza who plans on grabbing the jade lode since Wada's company owes money to his gangland bosses.

Dead Or Alive Review

Very Good
Here's the tagline for the first installment of Miike's highly regarded (and deeply disturbing) Dead or Alive trilogy: "WARNING: This motion picture contains explicit portrayals of violence; sex; violent sex; sexual violence; clowns and violent scenes of violent excess, which are definitely not suitable for all audiences." Never mind the clowns. This warning doesn't even get close to the truth. I'm talking about beastiality, scatalogical horrors, countless prostitutes, and geysers of blood. I'm not sure Dead or Alive is suitable for any audience. Miike, for what it's worth, does have a good yarn to spin here, about rival Chinese vs. Japanese gangs, a renegade cop who needs money for daughter's operation, and the intertwining of all of these. Miike's direction is a virtuoso performance of long shots and extreme close ups combined with swirling in-your-face action. And either he coaxed excellent drug-addled performances from his actors or he seriously doped them in real life -- either way, bravo.

Note: There's probably no point in seeing the R-rated version of this. Get the director's cut, which is unrated.

Gozu Review

Good
When you go to see a movie by manic Japanese goremeister Takashi Miike, you expect to enjoy generous helpings of comically creative violence and acts of unspeakable sexual depravity presented at a rapid-fire pace. Imagine riding the Tilt-a-Whirl while someone throws buckets of blood at you. It's usually like that.

Gozu has its share of violence and depravity, but Miike fans accustomed to the outrageousness of films like Ichi the Killer will be amazed and disappointed by the slow pace and pregnant pauses of his latest effort.
