Renee Zellweger withdrew from the public eye after her short-lived marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney because she didn't want her private life to become public property. The COLD MOUNTAIN Oscar winner stunned fans and the media when she wed Chesney on the Caribbean Virgin Island of St John on 9 May 2005, after a whirlwind four-month courtship. Zellweger filed for an annulment of the marriage just four months later (SEP05), citing "fraud" as the reason for the couple's split. The annulment was granted the following December (05). The 37-year-old was adamant her failed relationship would not result in a war of words in the media. She says, "I didn't want to share anything with anyone. We all deal with this kind of thing in our own way. I also didn't want to become a figure of entertainment to others. "The reality of the situation was far more important. It would have rubbed salt in the wound to have entered into any kind of public debate. "I'm not alone - and I'm not the first. Someone else always has a view, but the truth is a private matter for yourself to deal with. I didn't want to take part, unwittingly, in a circus. "Don't make me out to be a victim."
